So I have always been afraid of starting a thread on any forum out there for fear of backlash or people crying out to revoke my reef club status. The reason being is I do things my own way and have had some good success with doing it my way. Now I know everyone has an opinion about their setup and people tend to think real highly of how they have things run. I like many people in the hobby started small. But, instead of ditching the small tank I just made it way more packed then ever. Currently I have three tanks setup but I cannot let go of my workhorse, tried and true this thing has never failed me and the simplicity of it makes me love it even more.

My tank is a Biocube 29 slightly modified. This is my second Bio cube as currently I live in Houston but my fiancee has another one setup in Cartersville, Ga. I am posting this because I would like some input from zoa people as to what parameters they have been running as I just completed an experiment with "dirty" water.

My setup is I ditched the hood and rim and hung a Hydra from AI over it.
Filtration is simple just some floss every now and again, purigen, and sometimes carbon.
Skimming I usually run every other day sometimes I get lazy and leave it on but for the most part when I feed I always make sure it is off. When I do skim it is with the Tunze 9002.
ATO is a Tunze nano.
I upgraded the return pump because I bought this one used almost a year ago and it was loud.
I also added the Hydor FLO to help stir things up in a more random pattern.
I use minimal Live rock. Instead I use Seachem Matrix to supply the biological filter for the tank.
No sand bed either. I just laid some eggcrate down on the bottom of the tank and a couple of months after I did that some frags fell under it making it elevated now.
This picture is from when I set it up here in Houston with some rock. I knew then that space was a premium so I changed routes on the LR.

After 3 months of collecting it turned into this.

Now I have blossomed into am almost full zoa tank.

I also have a 60 Cube and a 55 long setup that houses more zoas and some Euphy pieces. I collected the torches for a while and was up to 21 different pieces but locally people have got them off of me as I kind of fell more and more in love with zoas.

So with that being said let me tell you my params.
1.024
PH 8.2
Nitrates usually around 2ppm.
Mag steady at 1300
Calc around the 400 range.

I do have a flame scallop in the tank that hides in the back corner. I know they only rent space in our tanks but this guy looked awesome so I snapped him up.

Fish... Fish are something that I have not really got into. But I do have some.
Maroon clown misbar
Scopas tang
Kole tang

The kole is a little big for this cube and I am going to move him into the 60 soon when I find another smaller kole to take his place.
The tangs keep ALL algae under control.
I also stock heavy on snails. I have about 40 in the BC of the black foot trochus snails. They do an EXCELLENT job at keeping things clean along with the tangs.
I will post more on this thread as the progression comes along and might even throw in the other tanks in a bit.

I really want to know params for zoa only tanks though so if you have something post it up. At one point I ran my nitrates as high as 20ppm to see if it would change the zoas growth rate and or coloration. I have since scrubbed it back down to a way lower range.

Looks great man. Looks as though you are on the right path.

You werent kidding when you said powerhouse lol that nano is packed keep them pics coming

Very interesting and unique setup! Works well for those zoas...... what are the ones in the bottom photo called? Very nice!

Nice tank. It looks like a zoanthid apartment complex LOL.

What are these bright green/yellow ones?

So the bright green yellow ones are asian imports. I ordered a tone of colonies in December and out of the thousands of polyps I got these 70 where different. I have not seen them anyplace else and I have tried to compare and find a name for them but I have yet to find one. I guess I need to give them a name. They are in a zoa sandwhich between fruit loops and another no name zoa. I guess that is what happens when they make whoopie. TOTAL color variations.

These are what I call my top shelf zoas. Some have names others do not they just look really good and I like looking down at them.

Yeah I read the whole thread over and over and over. Kind of started like me. I started this second tank back in December. This is my 60 cube that I am slowly starting to stock up. I have not found a good configuration as of yet for my eggcrate masterpiece. I feel that it is going to be pretty massive though.

As for where and how did I get so many asian zoas. I bought it from a retailer. I woud have had more but shipping got screwed up and the package sat overnight in some pretty cold temps in Atlanta. I lost 3/4 of the shipment. What did survive though was some pretty amazing stuff. Thousands of polyps of fruit loops, emeralds on fire, La Lakers some unnamed wild ones that I has never seen before. The 60 cube was setup just for those zoas to grow and change and grow some more. I was going for wall to wall zoas. This is what it looked like the day I put them in the water.

This is what was left after I threw some away that were clearly gone already. Slowly after that the severely stressed colonies started to develop the white fuzz of death and wilt away.

I added some Jurassics and another housing unit to move items around a little bit. Plus the other things I bought this weekend lurking through the local stores. I had a frag fest today cutting back some of the growth on the BC tank because some zoas where starting to attach to the egg crate. Plus, I want some trading stock for some shows coming up in Texas.
Here is a shot of the Jurassics.

Here is the new configuration.

Anyone have suggestions for correcting the orientation of the photos? I do not see an edit area to correct the orientation. They view correctly on my computer but uploading them here for some reason turns them.. Hmm

Anyways here are some of the frags I put out today.

Someone also has asked if I adjust my pictures in post. I do not adjust or color correct or saturate in post what so ever. I just use a cheap camera that shoots in the high Kelvin range.

The Olympus E-Volt 500 has been a sturdy companion for me now for over 8 years. This little DSLR does some good stuff. I just shoot freehand without a tripod and import in. Now, I know that I could probably even better pictures if I play even more with the settings but I feel that these pictures are pretty fair for the amount of time I want to put into taking pictures.
