So I have always been afraid of starting a thread on any forum out there for fear of backlash or people crying out to revoke my reef club status. The reason being is I do things my own way and have had some good success with doing it my way. Now I know everyone has an opinion about their setup and people tend to think real highly of how they have things run. I like many people in the hobby started small. But, instead of ditching the small tank I just made it way more packed then ever. Currently I have three tanks setup but I cannot let go of my workhorse, tried and true this thing has never failed me and the simplicity of it makes me love it even more.
My tank is a Biocube 29 slightly modified. This is my second Bio cube as currently I live in Houston but my fiancee has another one setup in Cartersville, Ga. I am posting this because I would like some input from zoa people as to what parameters they have been running as I just completed an experiment with "dirty" water.
My setup is I ditched the hood and rim and hung a Hydra from AI over it.
Filtration is simple just some floss every now and again, purigen, and sometimes carbon.
Skimming I usually run every other day sometimes I get lazy and leave it on but for the most part when I feed I always make sure it is off. When I do skim it is with the Tunze 9002.
ATO is a Tunze nano.
I upgraded the return pump because I bought this one used almost a year ago and it was loud.
I also added the Hydor FLO to help stir things up in a more random pattern.
I use minimal Live rock. Instead I use Seachem Matrix to supply the biological filter for the tank.
No sand bed either. I just laid some eggcrate down on the bottom of the tank and a couple of months after I did that some frags fell under it making it elevated now.
This picture is from when I set it up here in Houston with some rock. I knew then that space was a premium so I changed routes on the LR.
After 3 months of collecting it turned into this.
Now I have blossomed into am almost full zoa tank.
I also have a 60 Cube and a 55 long setup that houses more zoas and some Euphy pieces. I collected the torches for a while and was up to 21 different pieces but locally people have got them off of me as I kind of fell more and more in love with zoas.
So with that being said let me tell you my params.
1.024
PH 8.2
Nitrates usually around 2ppm.
Mag steady at 1300
Calc around the 400 range.
I do have a flame scallop in the tank that hides in the back corner. I know they only rent space in our tanks but this guy looked awesome so I snapped him up.
Fish... Fish are something that I have not really got into. But I do have some.
Maroon clown misbar
Scopas tang
Kole tang
The kole is a little big for this cube and I am going to move him into the 60 soon when I find another smaller kole to take his place.
The tangs keep ALL algae under control.
I also stock heavy on snails. I have about 40 in the BC of the black foot trochus snails. They do an EXCELLENT job at keeping things clean along with the tangs.
I will post more on this thread as the progression comes along and might even throw in the other tanks in a bit.
I really want to know params for zoa only tanks though so if you have something post it up. At one point I ran my nitrates as high as 20ppm to see if it would change the zoas growth rate and or coloration. I have since scrubbed it back down to a way lower range.
