Hello,
For some reason my magnesium is very high on my reef tank?
I’m using a Red Sea magnesium test kit to check this level, and I’ve read that Red Sea has had issues with several other people having high mag levels. I did have an extra Red Sea mag test kit that I wanted to see if it would read lower, and it’s high as well????
Nothing in my tank looks like it’s affected by possibly having high magnesium levels?
My main question is if they are high how do you lower them?
I’ve done several water changes over the course of the last two months hoping that it would lower my magnesium levels
I’m also not dosing any magnesium supplements at this time as well???
I’m very confused
Help :)

How high is high? What salt are you using? What other supplements are you using?

Get a reading from a different brand kit before you worry too much about it

Yup, same here.
I use aquaforest products and my magnesium reads very high.
I don't add any magnesium at all.
I sit at 1400 mg/L
No idea why. Only thing I can think of is that I got a magnesium-rich pale of AF salt.

The bad batches of the Red Sea Pro mag kit that I've had in the past, read about 90ppm too low.
Cal and Alk intake froze up and precipitated, but I was staying real tight to natural seawater #'s at that time.

Since those days, moved on the the Salifert kit and maintain mag from 1400 to 1420ppm.

Some cal products contain mag in them too. So when you dose cal your mag will rise.

When i got my new red sea pro test kit my mag went to 1500. Old test was around 1400. I just assume one of them is not reading right and tank looks fine so i dont worry about it.

If magnesium is actually higher than you want, the only way to lower it is to use a salt mix with a lower level and continue regular water changes.

I was experiencing the same issue with Magnesium levels. I use a Salifert Magnesium test kit and had tested 2 different times, only to never have a color change in the test, meaning my Magnesium was high, over 1500. I waited a couple days and retested...1485. Magnesium levels will decline naturally on their own. I use Fritz RPM salt which is supplemented with Magnesium and other nutrients. I was happy to see it test within range. I would say not to worry, and just retest in a few days.

Sorry Guys... ;Sorry
I had problems with the Red Sea Pro mag reading high too.
