My miami

No offense to anyone, but I have seen way better stuff in the chalice show off thread. I'm sure it's nice and all ,but not for more then $250-$300...

Does this coral really look that nice and worth $1,500 per eye. I still believe there are many other thoughtafter pieces such as melting pot, acid trips, FnF Psychedelic and jabawaki are much much nicer than this.

I have seen it in person, and yes it is nice. $1500 nice, not to me.

If I had it though, I would be charging whatever I could get for it too. Why wouldn't you? If someone is going to pay and be happy with their purchase, you can bet I would want to get whatever I could for it. Its the name of the game in life.

It is pretty distinct and cool looking for sure. I think it is one of the better watermelons out there.
I haven't seen it under 14k lighting though. If I was going to drop $1500 on ANYTHING, I'd want to see what it looks like in "normal" non-blue lighting. Or anything that doesn't make the purple coraline algae or rocks look blue.

IMO-->lol, hahahahaha, lol, \LOL!!!!!:tongue:Ok well I guess even suckers own fish tanks. I think that scam is totally ridiculous. Come on people!!!

I had a chance to buy a buger-sized frag of it 6 months ago for $2500 and get ahead of the wating list. What is crazy is that I was almost stupid enough to do it! We look like a buch of idiots fighting over the latest and greatest new material item at the mall! It make you feel so good that you got it but soon enough everyone will have it and it is no longer the great thing it was when only three people in the US had it!

I agree twinspots! I had the chance to see the jabawaki mother colony prior to Matt fragging it and I is the most beautiful chalice I have ever seen! It was nice to see some new specimen that came in that was not a Watermelon. I think my favorite chale is the one that I picked up ata local fish store tagged " So ugly it is cool" for $20 that turned out looking like this!

The worst part about reefing to me is people trying to make a buck of others!

I say the first frag go for their asking price and steeply decline to $300-$200 frag in a few months. It is not going to meet the hype that has built up over the last 6- 8 months.

Good luck for those who still want it!

Does anyone have a regular 14k picture of it?
ie. no powerbrites, actinics, or 20k's?

I don't know. I don't necessarily think this would be the benchmark of "normal" lighting. I would never run my tank with just 14K bulbs myself. My tank's WB comes out to about 8K, but it's a combo of blue bulbs and white and red. In the end I get great colors from all spectrums, and pretty much everything pops and the tank does not look at all blue, but there is definitely blue. I don't think the 14K color temp of a single light-source is ideal. I know what you mean about everything looking blue in those pics, but I wouldn't necessarily discount the straight 20K pic. I know plenty of people running just 20K radiums on their tank.

I still don't think this thing is worth the price ****, which is why part of me thinks even a group grow out is a bad idea. In the end it doesn't matter if a group does buy it; the price is still justified to the seller. Everyone is constantly trying to set the new record and be bigger/better. In the coral trade right now it seems to be the mark of greatness to be the new most expensive.

I wouldn't really worry so much about losing the piece in an event of a growout, so much as questioning the sensibility of paying the money. I've had my main tank running for eight years and it's rock solid. Never once had a crash or bout of instability (aside from initial break-in stuff). Got a OME piece with four eyes and went to nine in a little over a month. Got a miami hurricane that almost doubled in size and went from two to six in a little over a month. My ECC Hybrid grew from one eye to 13 in a year. Cotton Candy started with five eyes and has nine now after about two/three months. I'd say it's not unreasonable to think in somewhere in the neighborhood of a year ten frags could be harvested. Still doesn't make the first eye worth $1,500.

I prefer the look of the more traditional watermelons much more. I don't get all the hype surrounding this piece. I mean, it's obv very nice, but somebody has been smoking some seriously good stuff if they think it's $1.5k+ an eye nice... I agree with Ian, threads like these only fuel the fire and add to the hype....

I can picture WWC owners sitting behind there computer screen like mr. burns from the simpsons during threads like these...

i just hope the person who pays 1500 for it comes on line to brag so the rest of us can point and laugh

when did reefing get so crazy?

I have seen that Jose Casas piece in person and the story behind it and now fully understand the price tag that goes with it. I wouldn't pay that much for a coral, but then again I wouldn't shell out the cash for a Gem tang (Black tang with ich..lol) but some people have the funds and can afford it so see folks, it's all relative.

I think that we as a hobby community as a whole have been completely unaware of the side effects of palytoxin and it's reasoning and impulse-control impairing properties at low levels within our reefs. One more reason to start using arm-length gloves whenever working in our reefs.

When saying "Bazooka Joe" are you talking about the chalice, the gum, or the palys?

Every wonder why WWC held back on releasing this corals? Its all about building hype and having exclusivity, then Bam, releasing 1 frag after another for $1500. Smart marking but bad for long term business. Just take a look at all the other E-retailers that came before them with high end exclusive pieces. They are either struggling or out of business.
