My Moorish Idol journal!

Putting them in water and changing the water every day for 7 days. Curing...like live rock

Huh really never heard that from what I've read people just crack them and put them in the tank would it be fresh water or saltwater from the tank would I keep them refrigerated or room temp? And also sorry what is the purpose of this? The closest thing I've read is to rinse them very very well

Fresh water

And to make sure there are no impurities on the shells that could cause issues....

And room temp!

austin hes not talking about using oyster shells in his tank he is talking about feeding them to the idols.
the biggest problem i noted with idols was that they need to eat constantly since they dont compete real well for food and they have small mouths for being a big fish

Yup haha thats the plan I think Austin was confused by kelby's statement about possibly needing to cure them!
I was a little lost thinking it would spoil the oyster!

Well on the 48th hour in went their first clam they swam right to it looked at it looked at each other like hey let's go eat some more sponge so off they went to find some sponge and algae! Lol the one however I believe the male has a full set of eyelashes maybe that means female I don't know but only one of them has a full set but I'm going to dub the full lashed one a male!
Anyway he's the monkey that the other monkeys go ooh look monkey do monkeys do if he finds a spot to graze the others come rushing so if he takes to the clam I think the others will too, and every time he swims by it he checks it out! I think if the clam goes untouched I will be injecting the next one with garlic and their elixir as they seem to eat almost anything with it on it! As always happy reefing!

Days 3&4!!
Well day three those things ya know those pretty little white dots showed up yup are you thinking what I'm thinking "ICH" so measures were takin uv had already been running 24hrs, so I upped the amount of enriched food they were being fed as well as soaked the nori in a high concentration of VitC they all seem to have lost zero appetite as they are still grazing as much as before and sponge hunting! So fingers were crossed..,,
Day 4 less spots today and less as the day has progressed so I think maybe their immune system is turning around!
I was thinking maybe the sponge in my tank thinking the sponge in my tank has to absorb some of all of those vitamins and minerals that go into my tank maybe not? Anyone have any science on this?
Anyways with the progression of it the ich I'm hoping their immune systems have kicked up a gear and they continue to graze and eat!! And I think they'll pull through just fine!

So if I read all of the thread correctly it sounds as if you don't quarantine your fish. Is that a normal practice for you or was that something you did do to the difficulty of keeping these fish? I am in no way trying to critisize you or your methods, just curious.

Thanks

I had a morrish idol that would pig down dianichi pellet off the sand. He would not eat it out of the water column. Dont know about the long term because my red carpet anemone ate my idol. I was incredibly angry and no longer have the carpet.

Hey I'm actually down to one idol due to one being given away do to him being picked on and the jus this morning I found one on the floor he had bailed out during the night something must have spooked him which sucks because he was very healthy but the remaining one is doing great and will beat up all the tangs to get first dibs to the foods!

Haha mine won't touch either ! But they'd eat anything else so that's fine

It's not so much a feeding frenzy it's very methodical but they'll bully a tang if it gets the piece of food it wanted lol

Well sadly I must report that my last idol made the Jump the other night I wish I new what had spooked them because they were eating very well and seemed very happy would approach the glass when I came up to the tank to feed I think if I can get some healthy ones again I will be trying my luck at them again soon

Yeah before I try them again I will be putting a screen top on just never imagined them to be jumpers ya know

Yeah your right it is hard to picture an Idol jumping out of a tank.
