I’ve been searching everywhere for a nicely sized gem tang and after 3 months of awaiting an order I received it! The quarantine period was a bit rough.. I was a bit worried on getting him acclamâtes to the tank and his colour changes (which I now know are perfectly normal) quite scared me as they developed these harsh white lines on them when stressed. Anyways, now he is all good and was wondering if anyone had any feeding knowledge on these things and what they like/don’t like. Thank you! IMG_1713.jpeg

Gorgeous fish. Nori on an algae clip 3x a week, supplement with flakes. Remove uneaten algae within a half hour of placing in the tank before it ends up in your socks.

Not much different than yellows or purple I suppose. I kept both of those for over 6 years with other tangs and feed frozen food mainly. When in season I make my own. Right now they get PE mysis with LRS. I feed nori once or twice a week. I don't recomend pellets or flake as a staple for any fish. Many people feed pellet and flake successfully but I'm not a big fan. Same reason my dogs get 100% raw vs processed dog food. My tangs are always begging for food when I'm near the tank so I use the pellets as treats. Ocean nutrition formula 1 and 2 pellets are on hand for treats.

EDIT : yours is beautiful and looks nice and healthy
What did you feed in QT

No different than other tang I got.. mine is a bully and likes to fight with my blonde naso of all tangs haha! I must say he’s very sharp with his scalpel, my blonde has got a few nice slices.. I feed all my tangs 5 times daily and give 2 sheets of nori every other day and everyone is fat and healthy.

Great fish. Like all Zebrasoma Tangs they appreciate a good bit of swimming room, we’ll oxygenated water, live rock to pick at and deep caves to hide in.

I feed mine nori on a clip every single day. And New Life Spectrum pellets and frozen food.

Awesome!

With my Gem, I did a 2-3 month QT, then built a cage out of eggcrate I put at the top of my display that he stayed in for about a month until I let him out into the tank.

Problem was, I had a very large Black Tang I was worried about. After the month in the cage, everyone was cool.

Congrats on the Gem, a great choice. I'd say get a Nori clip and he should be a happy fish.

Honestly my tank is quite new, and out of fear I waited many months before sticking anything..I have a Rimini tang which was one of my first fish, and he is quite timid, shy, and gentle so when I introduced the Gem there were 0 issues and they are actually quite good friends. Since I don’t really have the option to quarantine I let him stay at the store which I am very good friends with so he got very used to seeing people early and is teaching my tomini to be less shy which is nice

Wow haha mine is super kind, maybe it’s because all my other fish just took that he was the boss immidiately lol.. maybe a weird question but is their a specific brand of nori which is preferred ?

I use Julian springs but any is fine honestly.. most people buy a bulk pack of sushi nori off Amazon. I also feed mysis and gut loaded brine daily along with pellets and garlic flavored fish flakes… just feed all your fish a variety of foods and they will be healthy.

I just feed the regular NLS small marine pellets. All my tangs love them. Then frozen food at lunch and nori in the evening. Can’t go wrong with that mix.
