My new "golden" Tridacna crocea

Hello everyone,

I wanted to show you my new Tridacna.
I bought the 21st of October, it seems to be doing good.
It has expanded the flesh since I first put it in the tank and it has attached to the rock with its foot.

I love these guys! I would love one for my Red Sea max nano but I worry the water isn’t stable enough..

I'm not an expert on clams but I think that they do appreciate stability but I know for sure that they love to be fed with live phytoplancton.

It looks very healthy! Is it a Tridacna derasa?
The idea of the frag tank with many kinds of Tridacna sounds great! It is really nice to have many types of Tridacnas to appreciate their beauty. Maybe I'd avoid buying the species that become too big so that you don't have to worry about this important aspect of keeping Tridacnas.

Both clams pictured are T. maxima and they look good. Give them strong lighting, no need to feed them, but phyto and detritus don’t hurt. Phyto is great for micro fauna and if you stir up some detritus your clams will filter what they want. Despite popular belief, clams don’t require feeding, but do feed.

How can you know for sure that it is a maxima and not a crocea? Is it the pattern on its flash of it or else?

The mantle shows which species on the first clam. The pattern and the distinct rows of eyes are pretty common on maxima. The second clam has similar features, but I need a better top down pic to be sure.

To the OP, I see what looks like some bleaching in the mantle, just make sure you’re giving it plenty of light. Sometimes if they sit in the store too long I see this occur, but they should heal up given stable conditions and adequate lighting. @FMF0331 take a top down pic in whiter light so we can see the full mantle.
Both are nice looking clams.

Nice! I see two maximas and what appears to be a squamosa. Turn up you whites and have another top down look and you'll see more vibrant colors. Clams shine in 6500k or full daylight spectrum.

Yes i did, price was right.
every time i go scuba diving, i can spend my whole dive time ( 45 mins ) watching the clams in their natural habitat

I've got an update for you:

The Tridacna's tissues have grown quite a bit.
What's really impressive is the amount of growth of its skeleton. Is it normal?
