That is a very beautiful creature. How big is it? Any photos with something for size reference. It seems to me that such an intelligent animal would get real bored real quick in such a small tank like a 30 gallon. I give you kudos for feeding it the live animals that you do. Do you think it could be happy in the long term in such a small tank? Not trying to bash you or anything but i'm curious as my intuition tells me it would need and should have a bigger tank. I know very little info about these creatures btw.

:)

A tank is a tank. It's even more necessary on a small tank! But to each their own, of course. Just PLEASE don't spread to new reefers or those having trouble that "small tanks don't need skimmers".

Now, note that I'm not arguing that YOUR tank is excellent, and has no need for a skimmer. Def. check phosphates, though. Toxic to all animals, but especially inverts, and especially cephalopods.

And again, congrats on keeping it alive, healthy, and seemingly happy. :) Makes me want to get one.. Been wanting another octo for awhile; I always saw that on QM's list every week and would "ugh!" because at least up until your account here, I'd never seen any successful keeping. Had I known, I'd have one of them already! :)

thats your oppinion. ive seen tons of small tanks without skimmers you just gotta keep up with water changes

Coolest thing I've seen on this site. Congrats and good luck on the beautiful creature, even though I disagree on the skimmer comment :) It always helps to have a skimmer, especially on a smaller tank. I do 20-30% water change weekly on my 29 gallon and my skimmer still pulls out gunk.

Well, sad news. The wonderpus is dead. I thought he was playing dead (which they do) at first so I left him alone, but after several hours, he was in the same spot. I gently nudged him with a stick, but no movement. After a couple of more hours, I determined he had died. So Nov 2009 - April 2010. RIP little octo buddy!

That sucks, man. But who knows how old they are when you get them.... That's the lame part. "Live fast and die!" - the octopus's motto. :( Your zebra-striped rock-star of a slimeball was awesome. I'm sorry for your loss. <3

Sorry to hear. Very cool animal and from what I've seen that's a pretty good time for keeping them alive.

There in lies the problem, octos just don't live long. They are hardy, and awesome, but you just won't be able to keep them for more than a couple years. And if you happen to buy an adult, it could be gone in a couple months. Sorry, he/she was really pretty.

I mean....you only posted 2 pics. If I had a wonderpus, I would take pics of it all day, not just two

Yeah it's an old thread but those pics don't look at all like home aquarium shots. There's no way they were taken in a 30g without any rocks, glass, filtration or otherwise. I'm calling shenanigans!
