Or should there even be a next fish?

I have a 10g tank with about 10-11lbs of live rock, a Red Fire Shrimp and a Royal Gramma. Would love to add another fish but also don’t want to overstock. Thinking of a clown, but open to suggestions.

I want to add something with another pop of color, hence the clown fish route. My Royal also likes to hide so I’d like an active swimmer.

Welcome to reef2reef! I’m not sure, 10g is pretty small! Your royal gramma is also going to grow to 4+ inches so be mindful of that.

Welcome!
10g is smaller than is usually recommended for either a clown or a gramma. I have seen both kept in a 10g by @biophilia - he may be able to share his experience. I have a gramma in my 10 gallon but I can not recommend this to others since I haven’t had the fish for long enough.

Some fish to consider-
Neon cleaner gobies, tailspot blenny (May nip lps and some sps coral but often reef safe), Pygmy geometric perchlet, possum or
Pink Streaked wrasse. A smiths blenny may also work but I’m relying on heresay more than experience for that.

A Royal Gramma is likely to be very feisty and territorial to any new addition in a tank of that size. I definitely feel they should have at least a 30 inch length to be happy long term and room to stake out their turf without bothering others too much. If I were doing a tank that small I would go for a Clown Goby (not to be confused with Clownfish) and a Possum or Pink Streaked Wrasse.
