Other than the general striping, it doesn't look like any randall's I've seen.

Do some google image searches, paying close attention the the face/snout structure, and the colors of the dorsal fin, anal fin, and the pelvic fins.

I agree i have seen slight differences, but there is a few things i'd like to add.

This fish came in from Marshall Islands as "misc. anthias". We have seen many anthias come in from the marshalls, but none like this. The closest we could identify it with is a male Randall's anthias. Randall's are usually found in Indo IIRC. Slight differences can be seen between some species depending on its location.

From pics I've found, i'm leaning more toward a submale. Most photos when searching show blue on the fins, which of course this one does not or has not developed them yet.

Bottom line, this was our best guess collectively (myself, Dan, secretreefer, & J.Copps), though none of us was 100% on the ID.

If anybody else has any ID suggestions, we are open to them.

+1 i used rudie Kutier's book of anthias/basslets. to identify. he's fresh in the tank so i'd give him maybe a couple weeks to "get his buti groove on" hahah!

check out this link. looks like my guy to me....and i think Kev has hit the nail on the head. mine looks to be a sub-male.

Well, first of all, I certainly wasn't criticizing anyone's ID. Not like I have any good ideas.

I just thought the yellow on the dorsal, anal, and pelvic fins is unlike any randalls pic I have seen.

It's a gorgeous fish, randall's variant, or otherwsie, so congrats was my only point :nerd:

no worries. it's all good. i want to make sure i call my fish by it's right name also! let's see i guess his name will be Randall...............

I didn't take it that way SDguy. no worries. I actually did make a mistake though. The fish came in from Christmas Island and not Marshalls.

Aloha

beautiful fish really vibrant with the colors , so what do you feed him mine are getting finicky if it isn't live brine he will eat it and spit it out just like my 2 year old..

That is one HOT anthia!! if that is fresh in the tank I bet he will really be beautiful once he gets settled in. Anthias are such great fish, so active and colorful! I too would like to know what you feed yours.

Be sure to post another pic in a few weeks.

sorry guys. this guy didn't make it. due to decom problems. it's okay and it happens sometimes.

Decom????? What does that mean?

Sorry that you lost him. He looked gorgeous. You said he was eating. What happened?

+1 Decom? Short for Decompression? What are the symptoms of that and how does it progress? Is there anything that you can do to avoid it or reduce likelihood of it?

Sorry about your loss, he was stunning!

Decomp is short for decompression meaning the fish was brought up to the surface too quickly, I'm assuming. No idea what the symptoms are though...

yes sorry, decompression when they needle the fish's bladder to let out the build up of air. also sometimes the wound doesn't heal or gets infected.

To start, so sorry to hear you lost him, truly an amazing fish.

I have a trio of Randalls that I have had for about 8 months or so, they are doing great. THe only time the male gets anywhere close to that coloration is when he is 'flashing' for the females and courting them. Otherwise he is fairly basic coloring. Perhaps what I have is a Sub-male yet to turn fully.

Here is a bad pic to use as a comparison. THe one you had was extrordinary.
