I am looking in to getting the MR-3 skimmer. Has any one ever used or have one of there skimmers? If so how do they do? Any info would help me a lot setting up a new system with a little over 300 gallons of total water.

I had an MR1. it was a heck of a skimmer, but with the Beckett injectors, you need 1, a very powerful pressure rated pump and 2, to adjust them regularly to keep them running perfectly. I ran it for 2 years before upgrading to a SRO3000.

Cleaning wasnt that bad but you had to unscrew all of the thumbscrews to get the cup off. had to keep the Injector cleaned constantly too or it would salt creep up and lesen performance. also if you get a stomatella in the injector it will lessen performance as well.

there are Mods to them to improve performance and lessen micro bubbles. one is to make a U-tube in them to force the water more upward. Other is to fill in the holes on the injectors and drill smaller holes so you get a finer bubble in the mix. Both of these helped mine greatly. Let me see if I can dig up a photo of that mod.

The one thing I really liked about mine was that I could plumb in the discharge from my Bio-pellet reactor directly into the skimmer body. Otherwise as it got older, it got much harder to keep tuned. I had to adjust the dang valve every singe day ti seemed like. I only touch my SRO to empty the cup these days...

There are a TON of new skimmers on the market. while the MRC are old school and work, they have their drawbacks.

I run an MRC Orca Pro 2 on a 450 gallon system and it is a set it and forget it skimmer but it can only be run external! The MRC beckett skimmer is pretty old school and yes you will have to play with it to get adjusted properly and the beckett's will need to be cleaned regularly to function properly.

Mike, this is on my 180 with a 150 sump. total volume is about 225. I run the SRO internally. it is in a bin all is own with a very constant water level.

I got one acronym for you PITA!!! MRC is a local here in GA, and although they're nice, not worth it IMO.

I'd go with a Vertex over MRC any day!
