2 weeks later the tank had cycled sufficiently to begin adding CUC. I added this peppermint shrimp and some snails. The shrimp didn't make it, but at least a couple snails live on to this day.
It's been a while since I have updated this thread, but I did want to continue the story. Regarding the first shrimp, I am not sure why he did not make it. It could have been because of the immaturity of the tank, stress of transport, or some other unknown cause.
We left off with my tank having been two weeks old. I added a Koralia Nano and a Fluval Sea PS/2 Protein Skimmer which was designed for the tank, and it began maturing. In the beginning, the skimmate was clear and the bubbles thin, but before too long it did begin working well.
A little over a month in, I stocked some hermit crabs, and my very first corals, Blastomussa Wellsi, and Duncan frags from Aquarium, an LFS in Knoxville. The sales associate there was very knowledgable, having recently obtained a degree in Marine Biology. She helped me to identify hardy corals that would do well in my stock Fluval tank. I apologize for the photography. In the beginning, I depended on my iPhone's camera app to capture my reef.
Amazingly enough, my first corals are still living. What follows are recent pictures of these corals, though they have been moved to my 7.5 gallon pico/nano tank. The link for this tank's build thread follows:
The Blastomussa has shown fairly steady growth. I have added 2 additional Duncan frags since to a piece of rubble rock as you can see. The Duncan has been tougher. It initially exploded in growth with new polyps appearing almost instantly, but it has waxed and waned in health since.
