Hello all...

When I moved out to Atascadero, I lost all my systems in one fell stroke. Slowly, I have been biding my time before I could set up my new system; a 60 gallon cube. Moving, a new baby, and getting two new jobs takes a lot of time and work, so I had to pinch pennies and slowly amass the supplies I needed to get this aquarium going. I'm glad to say now it is ready (mostly). Just have to let it cycle--although the rock has well over 6 years in aquariums--it probably had some die off when I built the rock structures. I utilized carbon fiber rods and epoxy to stack my rockwork. Drilled each piece with a masonry bit to make large pillars and arches. This is the only way to get height in a cube tank, since the footprint is so small. I wanted to go for a more open, minimalist look. I also enjoy tanks that have pillars that reach the very top of the tank--my largest pillar is less than 1" from the surface.

System Specs:

  • 60 gallon cube 24x24x24
  • 20g High Sump
  • Ecoray 112DX LED Lighting (need to hang this)
  • 2x Vortech MP10
  • ASM G2 skimmer
  • RIO 2100 on flow inductors (cheap-o return)
  • Biopellet Reactor running Brightwell Katalyst pellets
  • GFO Reactor
  • Ghetto-fab Specimen Container refugium (in progress)

So here's a few pictures, tank has been running for less than 20 hours. Still a little cloudy:

I can't wait to get the EcoRay on this, it will be much brighter!

An idea of my aquascape.

Ghetto sump that needs a sock.

My new lights. These should blast this tank with plenty of PAR.

I would put the mp10's on the back of the tank on either side of the rock. A buddy of mine has this same tank and has it that way and his tanks awesome

Yeah I originally had it this way. I need to get my old blue box mp10 upgraded to the white box so I can use both my vortechs on nutrient transport mode to utilize Tue bqck wall better.

Thanks to everyone does on the compliments! I am going to hang the light soon... Just waiting on a paycheck. It's killing me looking at this with no light!

Looking good so far! Can't wait to see how your tank progresses!

Tank is coming along nicely. Nothing new to add, other than a few "rescue" SPS I saved from the trash bin of the store I work at. Six month old baby, going to school full time, and working around that schedule leaves little funds for the fish tank.

Oh well, she won't be neglected for too long...

Been awhile since I updated this thread, so here's some pics! Order is from oldest to newest.

Mmm, macroalgae salad!Just a little growth from my ghetto 'fuge. I am also cultivating Ulva which is like candy to herbivorous fish like Tangs.

BTA with whites only on and flow off (still looks great!)

Most lately, I have added a female Green Mandarin Dragonet (Synchiropus splendidus) that was eating P.E. mysis at the store. The tank is full of miscellaneous acroporas, zoanthids, chalices, acans, and montipora I picked up from friends and saved from the trash bin. Also added some nice Sustainable Aquatics clowns; one is a "vivid" fancy clown (I believe Amphiprion Ocellaris) and the other is a misbar "Onyx" clown (Amphiprion Percula). I think they will make interesting babies when they get big enough. Here's a bad picture from my phone of them:

The Onyx clown has a very noticible misbarring as well as the other side has a double teardrop. Third band is also misbarred and incomplete. The "Vivid" has a nice white mohawk on his head. Unfortunately the mandarin is too reclusive to photograph still. Eventually I'll get one of her.

Added some fish to the tank and a few corals.

FTS:

Good SPS growth with EcoRay 112dx

Goniopora

Zoanthids and mushrooms

Fighting Conch

Acanthastrea, Hairy Mushroom, & Ricordea

And now the fish...

Clownfish pair

Our beloved female mandarin

Male and Female Mandarin pair, sorry for the algae I keep the sides dirty to promote copepod growth (they're hard to photograph as well!)

This picture really shows the stunning coloration of the male Mandarin very well. I hand picked him in a batch of a few hundred. He literally glows!

And finally, the reason I work so hard:

Little fish guy/aquarist in the making!

Thanks for the compliments!

That looks great. How do you like the ecoray?
EcoRay is great. No heat, insane amount of light on tap and good blending (no spotlighting effect). I can't complain. I may add a couple t5s to give me some reds/420nm actinic though. Or maybe a cluster of purple/red LEDs. I think the new EcoRay units have these in them now.
