Once again (still!) I'm having skimmer issues. At the beginning of November I ordered a NYOS Quantum 120 skimmer for my RSR 250 (55 gallon in display). I set it up and it was filling the skimmer cup every 3 minutes so I got on here and asked for help.

It was suggested that a break in period was needed so I took off the collection cup and let it overflow into the sump to "break in."

Here it is today.

I don't think you need it in focus to see the problem. I've already raised it above the floor of the sump so that the water level is just under the recommended depth. I've tried opening and closing the flow, changing the air intake and lots of water changes but it's still doing this.

Tank is 11 months old and I've reached the frustration stage where I start to think about either re-booting or throwing in the towel. My fish and inverts are doing great but my corals. Eh. Not so much. But that's for another forum, another day. One problem at a time!

Still overflowing. Any more suggestions?

Were you running a skimmer previous, or is this the first one?

I had a heck of a time getting my first skimmer to stop overflowing. After who knows how many adjustments I made it all of a sudden started working. It was done on accident but what "fixed" it was moving the skimmer intake almost up against the sump glass. This caused a flow restriction. It took several weeks of running with the inlet partially restricted before (fighting levels the whole time) before I could run it in a normal manner without overflowing.

Not sure if that will work for you, but I got lucky and it worked for me.

This is my second attempt at running a skimmer. I gave up the first time because 1) it was noisy and 2) every time I did a water change I had to readjust it and when it was finally adjusted it was time for another water change and let's not forget the time it flooded the living room, leaked through the floorboards and water ran along the joist to drip on the heating system and blew a component (it's not over the boiler but it was close enough, you better believe I've got a leak alarm now).

My Skimz dc did the same. I raised it to the minimum depth and tuned it down to 75%. Not as bad now and only been running three weeks. Still in the adjustment stage I think, but better. Also quiet as a mouse.

I can try and help you here as I’ve got the NYOS Quantum 160 which is the same but slightly bigger. They do have a run in period before you can go ‘full power’ but you can control it in the meantime,

The photo is blurred so it’s difficult to see exactly with angles etc., but it looks to me like the skimmer is barely in the water by just a few inches?

It should be sat down in the water so the water line is around 22cm deep, ie the skimmer is submerged to this depth on the bottom of your sump.

Once you set the depth, turn the controller tube so it’s fully open and if it’s still overskimming tighten down the screw at the top of the smaller tube and that will help it settle down. Then ‘slowly’ open up the screw until the skimmer is not overskimming and then over a period you want the screw completely open. Then use a combination of the screw and closing the controller tube until the bubble level is near the bottom of the collection cup.

There is a run in period but this can be days or a few weeks but hopefully the above will help sort it out for you ?

I just went thru the same thing with my brand new nyos 120 for a red sea reefer 250. Take out the skimmer put it in a 5 gal bucket of 50/50 rodi water and vinegar. Let it run for an hour or so( I let mine run for over 2 hrs). It will still over flow in the bucket like crazy, but don't worry. Take it out rinse it really good (in the sink with tap water will be fine). When you put it in the reefer 250 sump floor it will run perfect. Just make sure the wedge pipe is all the way open, and the open close knob is all the way open. I started my air control nozzle barely open then opened it all the way

I'd raise the skimmer and check the airflow :)

When it comes to skimmers it's primarily about the airflow and water level. I find myself having to adjust the water level every so often as I feel my skimmer had a mind of its own! Hope this helps.
