My socks are filthy, but i think i know why. Most of the gunk is i think what i'm dosing, (reef Roy, fauna marine for filter feeders, etc) i feel like i'm wasting all my dosing supplements into them.

besides the skimmer is doing a great job with dry skimmate . What do you think should i take out the socks to prevent over filtering and thus wasting my money or should i leave them in. I'm also concerned about my pods ending in them too.

I have never run socks, don't really see the point, just a fuge here and my water is always clear.

Lots of people run without them so you'll be fine without them. I run mesh only, just to catch the bigger stuff that get through my standpipe drain strainer.

Do you turn off your return pump for awhile and leave powerheads on when your dosing your supplements?

I use felts socks (never heard of mesh ones but I am intrigued) and they are black after three days and I don't dose much. I only add special blend (bacteria) and nite out, an ammonia/nitrite neutralizer as precaution (I'm an over feeder ;Yuck. I'm not sure it is what you are dosing BUT, what is your tank size, how many fish etc. Are you part of the over feeders club like me?

I have 3 socks on my 220 and the dirtier they get (till I need to clean them due to being to dirty to pass water threw) I feel can have a polishing effect on the water..But I also have a heavy fish population so for me I think they are good to use..

There are times when I think mabey I shouldn't use them 24/7 ! But I'm still not sure about actually not using them..

You can cut a few holes in them. If you have enough pods to get caught you have a LOT more in the tank and DT.

Also go sockless for a bit and see how it goes. There's no sock rule. I hope.

Nice plan, maybe I could start the flip flop / thong police, "No To Socks"! ;)

I use felt socks every other week. 1 week with felt socks and 1 week without.
