My sponge population has significantly decreased.
Is it missing silica? Or something that eats it? FWIW, I do dose KZ Spongpower daily.
 
Reduced compared to what? Many sponges do not do well in aquaria.

I'm not sure what is in spongepower, and do not know if it contains any silicate.
 
Sponge decrease is directly related to available nutrients, especially po4. Is your po4 low?

Sponge Power does not contain Si.

An Si source may be useful in addition to the acetic acid (plus whatever else?) that the Sponge Power contains.
 
Idk about Si but I drip phyto into my tank and ever since I started that I noticed sponges have started growing all over in my aquarium
 
The typical white/grayish and yellow ones that are most prevalent in home aquariums.

White sponges are not photosynthetic, and I'd be very surprise it it takes up much, if any, nitrate or phosphate from the water. They are filter feeders that get nutrition from particulate and possibly dissolved organic matter.

If folks have noted a correlation with nitrate and/or phosphate, nutrients, it may be because particulates were also higher in whatever systems was examined.
 
Use a turkey baster to blow detritus out of rock crevasses and into the water column weekly. Yeah, a literal cloud of fine particulates that can now be filtered out mechanically while benefiting inhabitants. This simple task keeps live rock and sponges healthy.
 
With regards to what sponges eat (TLDR at bottom):
Most sponges that I’ve looked into primarily consume Dissolved Organic Matter (DOM - sometimes called Dissolved Organic Carbon, or DOC, which is actually a component of DOM) and specific kinds of bacteria (which kinds vary at least a little from one sponge to another). Most of them seem to have no preference for where their DOC comes from, but they have a preference for algal-derived Dissolved Organic Nitrogen (i.e. DON produced by algae). Giant Barrel Sponges and some Boring Sponges have had their diets analyzed, and they primarily consume DOM (~80% of their total diet, with the remaining ~20% coming from Particulate Organic Matter (POM - primarily phytoplankton and bacteria, though, as mentioned above, bacteria is taken in much higher quantities than phyto). This ratio of approximately 80/20 seems to be pretty typical(though it can vary from what I've seen by +/-15% or so one way or another) for most sponges from what I can find.

Unfortunately, we don’t have an easy, hobbyist way to measure DOM, DOC, DON, or POM (or POC or PON) that I’m aware of, so we don't really have any way to determine if the sponges are getting enough food consistently to thrive (to say nothing of measuring the amounts of specific bacteria in our tanks), but there you have it.
some people have found stirring up their sand to be an effective food source for sponges, likely because it puts bacteria and DOM into the water column.

To add to the above, knowing that bacteria and DOC are important, some people might recommend carbon dosing and/or turning off a UV if you have one running so as to encourage bacterial population growth (you may need to be careful if you try this though, as too big of a bacteria bloom could cause issues in your tank).

For general sponge health, I've heard good things from people dosing ChaetoGro, and some phyto dosing and/or macro in the tank may help encourage sponge health/growth too.

Also, a couple of things pertaining to sponges and silicates - most sponges do need them, so it may be a good idea (as mentioned) to dose silicates if you're trying to promote sponge growth. Supposedly pineapple sponges do too, but I can't figure out why they would need it in anything less than small quantities:
If there’s a high level of silicates and a sufficient amount of food for the sponges (including things like Dissolved Organic Matter, bacteria, phytoplankton, and some Particulate Organic Matter), then you may see a population boom with sponges.
TLDR summary:
-Most sponges that I've seen the diet analyses for seem to eat ~80% dissolved organic matter and ~20% particulate organic matter (including bacteria and phyto - I've seen Isochrysis galbana [T-Iso] specifically used); they seem to do okay (not usually great, but okay) in labs when fed just phyto in sufficient quantities. Blowing detritus off of rocks and stirring your sand bed to release stuff trapped there may help feed your sponges.

I think i have found the culprit, and its my Esterina starfish. Recently, their population has been increasing significantly.

Out of curiosity, would you be willing and able to put a piece of the sponge in a container of tank water with a few of the stars so you could observe it and see if the stars are in fact eating it (preferably with video and/or lots of pics)?

When my "asterinas" got to high proportions years ago, I did observe them feeding on sponges. I'll have to see if I have pics.
 
I use to have tons of pineapple sponges when my tank first started up, I've been pretty much dosing Silica since spotting them in hopes of keeping them around to help clean up the water. Despite my efforts they have all but disappeared and now it seems they have been replaced by some sort of colonial hydroid that lives in all the dark areas of my tank.

No can do because there are no sponges left in my DT. KZ solved it with growing sponges. The Spongpower is very effective IME. Now i have sponges in my overflow box which is also a heaven for Aiptasia and other filter feeders.
 
FWIW I see a lot of cyano in my Cheato refuge. Corals seem not to be affected by the decimation of the sponges in the DT.
My PO4 and NO3 are around ~0.2 and ~10respectively.
