It's probably starving and dying. They start loosing pieces until they are dead. Not trying to be so blunt but that's what happens to some starfish in reefs. Many have a specialized diet that we can't provide (or don't know what they eat).
The Red Knob Sea Star requires a large aquarium with ample supplies of live rock. A small specimen will eat algae. As it grows older, however, it is not reef compatible, as it will eat soft corals, sponges, tubeworms, clams, starfish, and other invertebrates.
