I didn't set it up this way... I bought it used.

However, the overflow enters a skinny chamber, then flows into the fuge, then flows into a larger chamber that houses the sump and return pump (with no bubble trap).

So, from a biological filtration and practicality standpoint... it's fine.

However, it means retuning my skimmer when my ATO reservoir is depleted and I don't catch it right away... and it means microbubbles in the display.

Has anyone ever tried to re configure their sump while under their display. I'm thinking of draining the sump, removing existing baffles/silicon/water, setting it up the way I think it should be, installing new baffles and silicon, and letting it dry for 24 hours.

I'm mainly worried that leaving my display tank with nothing but my wavemaker for a day and a half will be harmful.

Has anyone done this before?

How about a picture so we can see??

And don't worry about the display. Just make sure you put a heater in there and you should be fine for a few days.

You can always use a spare 20 long or rubbermade or whatever as a sump while your silicone drys.

can you drain it and turn the sump around the other way?

And yes, you can take the sump offline for as long as you like. Just have enough wave action for oxygen exchange, a heater in the tank.

I don't think I can turn the sump under the tank because of the center support unfortunately. Even if I did, I would still have to drain it to add the bubble trap. I guess I could still keep the fuge wet that way though....

24hr without the sump is not going to crash your tank I have had my tank run on its own for 24 hr while I overhauled the sump ,and you could all so have water made up and do a water change while the sump was disconnected for the 24 hr period and don't feed that day.

But that's only my opinion I'm sure other ppl will reply and give you good advice.

The only thing to take into account is how heavy your tank is stocked with coral and fish.

Can we have a picture? I would drain the two side sections, and then turn the sump sideways so you can slide it out one side of the cabinet. Then turn it around and put it back in the same way. I’m guessing your refugium would have a lot of die off if you dried it out.

Or just put your return pump into an acrylic box that will act as another set of baffles and keep the rest of the return chamber constant height.

If you shut down your sump for an extended period, just remember, you need a heater in the display, plenty of water movement, and you need to watch evaporation... salinity can change fast without an ATO.

In my case, I'd also grab my Marinepure block and toss it in the display, and maybe my bag of carbon, just to keep it all active.

That said, a day, or several days, won't be a problem.

A few months ago, I ripped out my converted 55g sump and installed a much better designed Bashsea unit. Wish I'd have done it sooner.

It's a hobby. If you're not happy with some aspect of it, well, that's what hobbies are for... to give you something to mess with in your spare time. Swap it out, re-arrange the baffles, whatever you need to do.

If you do move your baffles around, don't re-fill until your silicone is CURED. Read the package... actual cure time can be several days.

you will probably need to drain all the water out of the sump to move it. You can put the water in buckets, put your chaeto in it and it will be fine for days. Your tank will be fine with no skimmer, ato, fuge for weeks

If it was me, I'd just switch how I use the chambers. use the fuge section for skimmer and put chaeto in larger return chamber using egg crate to keep chaeto away from pump. Alternatively u can also get a larger ATO reservoir to help minimize depletion.
