Let me introduce you to Van Gogh, Sunny and Joe. My Blue, Yellow and Sail fin Tangs. They’re big with even bigger appetites. So I ran out of Nori a few days ago. Went into my frig and whipped up a Tang Salad. Okay, maybe grabbed a single piece of Romaine. I proceeded to place it into my Two Little Fishies vegi clip. I stepped back and watched. They were definitely cautious at first. 3 hours later it’s almost gone. It turns out Romaine is a good replacement for a Nori shortage.
I remember a couple decades ago Romaine was the go to green for Tangs.

1. Does anyone still use anything besides Nori to nourish their Tangs?

Years ago I used romaine lettuce and broccoli florets but times have changed - we have options

The switch happened about 20 years ago when nori type stuff became available.

Before that we sold tangs and angels as vegetarians that needed to be fed veggies. Since most people didnt have access to real algae we recommended romain, broccoli, sliced carrots and cucumbers and stuff like that.

Then noir looking stuff came on the market. Some even came with sponge mixed in for angels. It was actual stuff from the sea so we sold it as such. Feed fish stuff from the sea, stuff from the land doesnt really meet their nutritional requirements.

And then people realized you could just get unroasted nori from the asian market at 1/100 the cost and here we are.

Land veggies are fine, nori is better, actual macro algae is best.

I only have one tang, a little tomini tang.
So far, he does not seem to go crazy for nori.
i started out with green nori, which he wouldn't really touch.
Then I tried soaking it in garlic. Still won't really touch it.

But I noticed that when I would feed RODs foods, with bits of nori in it, he would eat those bits. Seemed he would eat the bits of red nori out of the Rods, so I bought a pack of red nori. Wouldn't touch it. would swim up, sniff it and then swim away. Tried soaking it in garlic, still didn't entice him to eat it.

I'v since tried brown nori also, with same result. I'm down to purple nori as the last option. I just ordered a pack during now that the labor day sales are going on... so I'll give the purple a try next week, but not holding out much hope that he'll eat it.

Saying all that, he goes absolutely crazy for live red ogo. Unfortunately, I can't seem to grow any in my tanks, and its expensive to have to keep ordering and paying for shipping.

I will have to give some romaine a try.

Try rubber banding the nori to a rock. Algae clips can sometimes be intimidating for new tangs. Being on a rock is more natural and will usually get them eating it.

Will give that a try.
I have been unsuccessful with the two veggie clips and the Two Little Fishes magnetic mesh pouch holders that I currently have.

IMO, "land veggies" are NOT fine. The fish can't properly break down the cellulose in terrestrial food, such as romaine lettuce, unless blanched. No excuse not to feed nori or actual seaweed.

I used to place a few leaves in the freezer for a couple days to help breakdown the cellulose, don’t lose all the vitamins in the lettuce like you do when bleaching.

Definitely Romaine is a cheap possibility. Although your “Tomini” sounds like it’s got some italian heritage, I’d cut back on the garlic. Lol :)

I still feed my Naso romaine occasionally just to mix things up.

My yellow tang loves romaine for a day or two if I run out of Nori. I do use both green and purple and he loves both. I’ve never used broccoli but I do understand it is a reasonable optoon
