my tank is at 81

Nothing to be concerned. My 20 gallon IM has been at 82 degrees the last two weeks. It’s hot here in the Bay Area. All my fish and corals are happy. It goes down to 79 but for most part it’s at 82

It takes longer to cool water, then to heat it

yea it took me till 4 in the morning to cool it down but it hasn't risen up so that’s good

My heater got stuck on, raised to 81 from 75 overnight ~6 hours. Unplugged in the morning when I noticed. Still 77 12 hours later. 55 gallon tank, ambient room temp of 68.

If it’s just a screen than it shouldn’t matter just make sure the fan is blowing across the water

Get a clip on fan, assuming you can prop hood or some of it up? You can clip the fan to rimmed or rimless tanks or I'm sure there is other ways just need it to blow across the top of the water it works great I do it often especially in the summer as I didn't want to spend on a chiller or pay to run it my light bill high enough as it is and those chillers tend to be pricey to run so I've read online anyway. You can also point your return pump output/jets/nozzles toward surface more that'll also help cool down the water. I use a $12.99 clip on fan I got at Walgreens but Amazon or Ebay sells them as well. There is a bunch of different kinds out there that will work.

I had a heater/temp controller malfunction on me not too long ago (2-3 months ago) thank God my husband was home to notice the SMOKE rolling out of back of heater chamber and called me all frantic. 86 degrees was display temp! All the corals were starting to turn grey and the fish were as low as they could go/on bottom of tank. Immediately unplugged lights and heater (obviously) took frozen ice packs you know like the ones you can put into a lunchbox and set them into sump. If don't have that can use a ziplock baggie filled with ice cubes float in tank just be careful to not drop the temp too much too quickly depends how hot we are talking I suppose. Luckily all I lost was two SPS frags I had everything else survived and doing great.

Instead of blowing across the entire tank. If you can, try to point the airflow directly on the water surface. It may cool your water quicker but you will get more water evaporation so watch out for that.
Also, if you have UV sterilizer. The bulb will heat the water some also.

You could also keep a pitcher of RODI water in the fridge (or make ice cubes with it) and use that to top off the tank as water evaporates.

i don’t really have that problem right now and i ordered a fan for my tank next summer and i dont have a uv i don’t have the room for it

yea the thermometer is accurate i checked the temp with a few others and this whole thread is not a problem anymore but thx for the advice

Had a similar issue with my nano recently. Best thing get a 2 way controller with one plug for heater and another for the fan. Then sit back and enjoy
