I would add some granular activated carbon, in a bag, to your sump. Try that first.

Agreed. If things start smelling foul, I either change the carbon, or start running it again and that usually solves the issues within a day.

No, I have a BioCube 32 and the sump in the back, since it has a top to it, pretty much stays the same level all the time. If it goes a little low I always have RO on hand cause I mix my own salt water.

Speaking of. This all started happening when I started mixing my own water. I have been using Red Sea Reef Pro Salt Mix.

Maybe do a headcount on your snails also. I had a snail crawl into the back chamber and die. The smell was horrible, and it also got on my hand...and that smell tends to penetrate into your pores ;Vomit

I know the smell you're speaking of. When you empty out an old tank; it smells like low tide inside. That's why I asked about a low sump. I can't imagine how it would be your RO and salt mix.

I agree with what was previously suggested; run carbon and check to see if something died in the tank.
