my uncle found something cool in the new house today

he found a 1200gpd ro unit. he said it's 5 feet tall and is attached to a sediment tank and 3 equally tall prefilters and has a pipe running to underneath the kitchen. he said that to set it up with a lead to the garage would only take a little work. I am gonna look into new cartages for it so I can use it to fill tanks. i will prolly add a di to it too though so that it's 0ppm. I am betting it only comes out to like 4 or 5 ppm the way it's set up, but still a great find for the basement of a house I just bought. oh yeah, I will prolly use the ro for drinking water too.

I recommend getting all new filters.
That includes a new membrane.
This will eliminate any TDS from the old filter failing from neglect and age.

I am, the filters are 60 a piece and the membrane is 80. the sediment tank needs to be flushed too though

Is there a water storage tank? Usually you only have a RO sytem on drinking water and/or your icemaker line and a tank is needed for it to have pressure like we are use to.

I can see a whole house set of sediment filters, but RO wouldn't make sense. Just wanted to make sure you understand whats under the house.

Either way very cool and it will for sure help. FYI.... i'm sure you already know, but drinking RO/DI water can be dangerous.... so make sure you dont drink water after the DI stage.

I agree with brandon, make sure you dont drink DI water, also make sure you are looking at a RO membrane system and not a whole house water softener system. totally different stuff, I agree it wouldnt make sense to have that big of a RO unit on a house.

I checked. it was originally only run to the icemaker and an optional sink in the kitchen. it wasn't for the whole house. I was just there today and I was looking at it. it is an ro. there is another smaller softener there, but this is definitely an ro. it even has a line from it run to the sewer. it's not a very low tds rated one, but it is an ro. it's rated for only 5ppm tds though. i would have to find a 0tds membrane for it(it's a pain, I can't find a place that has one). my uncle said he could have it set up to even come out of a simple sink in the garage though. I told him it would be nice to have a fitting i could put a di on instead though. He thinking he can have my garage set up for my tanks. I hope that the unit isn't messed up or anything though. it looks like they just cut the pipes on it and ran another one in its place from the tap. i am gonna test it with pressure and all before I go out and buy membranes for it. shouldn't be too hard to do.
