Had my varios go bad after 2 years but most people have great success. I’m currently in the market for a pump as well and have been looking at the Sicce SDC series. They have a 5 year warranty

I’ve been running a Vectra L1 and M1 for over 3 years now. I clean them every few months and have never had any issues. Once they die I‘ll definitely be replacing them with L2’s and M2’s.

Three ways to go... 1). standard DC like you had and get about the same experience at 1 to 3 years, or so, 2). expensive DC with a Abyzz and get a good pump with a very good actual warranty at a high initial cost, or 3). an AC pump that will last for a decade for a cheap price. If you don't need to change speeds (not sure why anybody does with a return pump) and you cannot afford Abyzz, then look to Fluval or Laguna pump. Tradeoffs with any of these, but I use AC pumps since I need to them to work and work and work without issue and I don't sit there with a stethoscope on my cabinet door looking for a slight hum... and they are no more power in the real world.

Very interesting, I do use the dc controlability (new word go me), I do use the control, I run a spray bar return and like to change the flow! ;)

My varios 6 died last week :(

Not sure what happened but it sparks now when I plug the power cable into the controller

Replaced it with a M2

I really like my Sicce Adv pump, and their SDC is basically the same pump but controllable.

Love my m2!

Open up the m1 and see if you see bubbling or defects in plastic housing around the impeller. If so, you may be able to get it replaced for free by ecotech even outside of warranty. I know a couple friends that have had their m1s replaced with m2s given the design defect that ecotech has acknowledged.
