Hello everyone, I'm building a reef tank for my wife Patty, calling it,....Patty's Tank", using the Oceanic 29g BioCube. I've done enough modification's,....that I wish she would have let me build a custom cube with a sump !
But, she likes it anyway, and I love her. :sweet_kiss:

It will be a mixed tank, but mainly for clams, mushrooms, a few LPS's and maybe,....a Bubble Tip Anemone for a clown fish as it's host.

It is used and just had minor scratches on the glass, but I polished them all out with my auto body polisher and Cerium Oxide made for glass.

I removed some of the dividers and bottom plate so I could build the system the way I thought would be better.

The one on the bottom of chamber #1, so we could use the Cad Lights PLS-50 Nano Skimmer. It works fantastic when I tried it out on a different tank.
NEW PLS-50 Nano Pipeless skimmer (10G-50G Rating) [PLS-50] - $134.99 : CAD Lights, Think outside the cube

Removed the middle one to enlarge the chamber for a refuge and chemical's using the "In Tank" media baskets, between chamber #2-#3. See pics below.
Biocube 29 Media Basket

The third chamber is for the return pump and heater.

We also removed the canopy for more light. I have a Kessil 150w Sky Blue or my Orphek PR72 Reef LED Pendant.

I decided to try "Nature's Ocean Bio-Active Reef Sand". I was surprised it only took 3 days to cycle. The water was pretty cloudy but cleared up today.

Yesterday's testing results. (I did not use any chemical's like activated carbon or my skimmer, just poly batting in a sock, a lime wood air diffuser and the tanks return pump.

Ammonia- 0.75
Nitrite- 5 (+) Had trouble reading the exact color.
Nitrate- 50
PH- 7.8
Phosphate- 0.72
Oxygen- 7
Did not need to test the Calcium or Alk.

Today's test result's.

Ammonia- 0
Nitrite- 0
Nitrate- 10
PH- 8
Phosphate- .02
Oxygen- 7

The dead rock is from my reefer years back in the 90's. When we sold out, I bleached it and put it all in a garbage container, heavily rinsed them with RO/DI water, dried it out and placed them in the tank.

I just ordered the Dr. Tims, One And Only Nitrifying Bacteria for Nano Tanks, and really curious to try it out.

I'm hoping not,...to use a fish to add the ammonia cycle. I hate the toxic abuse that they go through !

Per the instructions, once the Dr Tims bottled bacteria is added, I'll test the water to be sure of his claims, I'll add one fish and go from there.

Below are some process photo's.

What do you think of the rock aquascapping and black sand ?

Very nice! Cant wait to see its progression

That's going to be awesome keep us posted on the progress.

wow, I really like that little tank! the scape looks fantastic! Love your bird looking on :)

Well Kevin................................. ABOUT TIME YOU MADE SOME PROGRESS ON PATTY'S TANK !!!

Looks good my friend, looking forward to seeing wet and full of critters.

Cheers, Todd

I hear you my friend !
She said all excited, when can I get my clam !!!
I said, in about 6 months. You should have seen the look on her face ! Lol

Really digging the aquascape! Sweet!

Without weighing the rock, I would guess about 30lbs. One piece is pretty heavy.

Our Eleanor Cockatoo's name is Shelby. (I built a 427 Shelby Cobra and named her after the car) lol

She's my little mechanic helper !
(and a drug addict)

Every couple of days my moluccan cockatoo would watch me do the evening fish feed, he was allowed to take one drink of the aquarium water, (no chemicals), after watching this for months the macaw assumed she was missing out and insisted she be allowed to have a reef drink, she spewed and shook her head so hard to get rid of the salt water she almost fell off my hand, she acted like I had tricked her, guess maybe the cockatoo has a higher tolerance for salty water. Good luck with your nano, rock scape looks good I like the slight asymmetry and the arch

lol,...that's funny !
Try and share a beer and see what happens !

Well, still trying to decide on which light to use, the ORPHEK or the Kessil 150w ?

Orphek has more information below than Kessil has.

Please let me know all your thoughts !

Importunacy- 1st for the corals, 2nd for us humans.

ORPHEK- Apx 12" above the water surface, much brighter, less Actinic than the Kessil, and being in the living room, it may be bothersome, as it shines into our eyes while watching TV.
Can be set up to control the light via Apex.

Kessil- Apx 12" of the water surface, tank looks bluer, we can hear the whine of it's fan, does not shine in our eyes, Has more shimmer than the ORPHEK.
Can not be set up to control the light.

ORPHEK-

PR72 REEF

•Highest PAR per watt.
•36 high power LEDs tuned to the PUR spectrum to provide excellent coral and clam growth.
•Maximizes natural colors of corals and clams.
•Mean Well dimmable driver for improved efficiency and longevity.
•UV and wide spectrum red, white and blue LEDs duplicate the PUR spectrum and giving an 16,000K -18,000K appearance.
•Replaces energy wasting incandescent, florescent, and metal halide lighting.
•Low energy use, typically 30% – 50% less than other lighting technology
•Aluminum finned heat sink effectively dissipates heat from the LEDs ensuring long life of the electronics.
LED Make up.

Lens

Orphek 60 degree lens

LEDs

36 x 3 watt LEDs at ~2watt

18 – White 14,000K- 16,000K

14 – Blue 450nm – 460nm

2 – UV/Violet 410-430nm

2 – Orphek Wide spectrum red.
-----------------------------------

KESSIL-

Kessil LED Lights

The SKY BLUE model's distinctive spectrum emits light similar to a 10000 K light, emitting a natural looking light while providing coral with optimized wavelengths

Love the rock work and bird. Out of curiosity. Why measure oxygen levels?

Sorry, forget about your question.

Once you have a any tank established, with good amount of water flow and filtration, testing your level is not as paramount. But I always test new tanks for a while.
I feel, that some of the problem with reef tanks today having cynobacteria, is not having enough in tank,..... water circulation. What happens is the sand (if using) and rock become anaerobic. So, if you have enough oxygen to circulation throughout the entire tank, the fish, corals rock and sandbed, will be much happier and healthy.

I wouldn't use either lights, if I had to pick, I'd go with the Kessil.
Maxspect just released a sweet spotlight, similar to the A150 but controllable, little bulky though. NBR has some of the best (If not the best.) LED lighting for aquariums.
