Hello everyone, I'm building a reef tank for my wife Patty, calling it,....Patty's Tank", using the Oceanic 29g BioCube. I've done enough modification's,....that I wish she would have let me build a custom cube with a sump !
But, she likes it anyway, and I love her. :sweet_kiss:
It will be a mixed tank, but mainly for clams, mushrooms, a few LPS's and maybe,....a Bubble Tip Anemone for a clown fish as it's host.
It is used and just had minor scratches on the glass, but I polished them all out with my auto body polisher and Cerium Oxide made for glass.
I removed some of the dividers and bottom plate so I could build the system the way I thought would be better.
The one on the bottom of chamber #1, so we could use the Cad Lights PLS-50 Nano Skimmer. It works fantastic when I tried it out on a different tank.
NEW PLS-50 Nano Pipeless skimmer (10G-50G Rating) [PLS-50] - $134.99 : CAD Lights, Think outside the cube
Removed the middle one to enlarge the chamber for a refuge and chemical's using the "In Tank" media baskets, between chamber #2-#3. See pics below.
Biocube 29 Media Basket
The third chamber is for the return pump and heater.
We also removed the canopy for more light. I have a Kessil 150w Sky Blue or my Orphek PR72 Reef LED Pendant.
I decided to try "Nature's Ocean Bio-Active Reef Sand". I was surprised it only took 3 days to cycle. The water was pretty cloudy but cleared up today.
Yesterday's testing results. (I did not use any chemical's like activated carbon or my skimmer, just poly batting in a sock, a lime wood air diffuser and the tanks return pump.
Ammonia- 0.75
Nitrite- 5 (+) Had trouble reading the exact color.
Nitrate- 50
PH- 7.8
Phosphate- 0.72
Oxygen- 7
Did not need to test the Calcium or Alk.
Today's test result's.
Ammonia- 0
Nitrite- 0
Nitrate- 10
PH- 8
Phosphate- .02
Oxygen- 7
The dead rock is from my reefer years back in the 90's. When we sold out, I bleached it and put it all in a garbage container, heavily rinsed them with RO/DI water, dried it out and placed them in the tank.
I just ordered the Dr. Tims, One And Only Nitrifying Bacteria for Nano Tanks, and really curious to try it out.
I'm hoping not,...to use a fish to add the ammonia cycle. I hate the toxic abuse that they go through !
Per the instructions, once the Dr Tims bottled bacteria is added, I'll test the water to be sure of his claims, I'll add one fish and go from there.
Below are some process photo's.
What do you think of the rock aquascapping and black sand ?
