My wife decided she wants to have her own little tank. She found this setup at the LFS on sale. It's a Marineland Halfmoon 20g, LED lights(42 white,3 blue) and a Seaclone 100 skimmer. She wants to have a couple of small colorful fish in it- Fish Only(no LR or Coral). She bought a couple fake coral decoration pieces to put in it. I have a couple of questions - 1)-Would this setup w/ skimmer only be enough for a fish only tank? 2)- What kind of fish(colorful) would be good for this type of setup? 3)- I have read some good and bad things about this skimmer. Several different types of modifications( to improve performance or cut down on micro bubbles). Any suggestions on this skimmer( besides throw it away-I've seen that too)--How long it takes to break-in?, any modification that work? Here are some pics ( Just has RO/DI water in it,skimmer and a small MJ -just to see what it looked like)

As for fish to get some ideas you can look at liveaquarias website, they have a section for nano fish. There are some different options that are available. One of my favorites is the Helfrichi firefish a little more than the red firefish or the purple but has some beautiful coloration.

keep the skimmer and give it a shot. even if you only get a little skimmate its better than none at all. you are going to want some other kind of filtration going on with this thing.

My LFS uses these skimmers on all of there Coral sale tanks and they seem to be pulling some pretty nasty stuff out. And they are fairly inexpensive just take a little time to get the Venturi adjusted properly

Yep it was the first skimmer I ever owned and will never own another one. The tubing from the maxi jet to the skimmer will crack over time plus they need adjusting every few days. I think you will be ok for now but I would plan to get a better one in the future. Imo

I own mine before I found out about the mods. I would keep a eye on it after feeding because mine went crazy when I fed some foods and when I use dechlornators with stress coat in them. With it hanging on the back it will overflow so if the outlet is near by well you get the picture. But that could be any skimmer. It will pull a lot of crud out but it just didn't pull enough out of the 29g I had it on. Your on the right path by checking to see what other think.
When I upgraded I got a corallife super skimmer and it blew my seaclone out of the water so to speak but since then I have found out that the corallife isn't much better so we are almost in the same boat. Lol

I have one, the only reason I haven't thrown it away yet is the acrylic may come in handy for a future DIY project...
