So I've been doing my weekly water changes and checking my levels. Yesterday as I got back from work my wife told me that the tang was listless, staying In one spot. Which was true he would stay low by the sand. This morning the tang died. Saw no signs of illness, no ich, stress idk maybe but I hadn't disturbed the tank in nearly a month and a half. Any ideas what might've been the cause.

What size is the tank? How long has it been up and running? Params?

This happens with tangs alot I think. Sometimes- even though you can't see it- they still could have parasites (such as flukes) living in the gills that you'll never see until they drop dead. He could have been listless and at the bottom because he was having some respiratory distress. Tangs are very susceptible to getting sick

Could be anything... Could of had some internal parasite, could of been old age.

Might be stress, that tank is kind if small for a tang. Tangs usually require at least a four foot tank and 75 gallons.

Yeah the tank is small and I was in the making of getting a bigger tank which I would put the tang in. But I'm hoping its old age cuz my other fish are healthy as can be

Tang need to graze. I have to keep my seaweed clip full or my tang would not be happy and start sulking. I have a 55G and he is doing ok thanks to his size (4") but I know he needs a bigger tank. They like to be on the move and he sprints back and forth and zig zags thru my rocks as well. If he is camping a spot he is not happy and doomed. I put the clip near a power head so he can fight some current to munch and he loves it and is doing well.

He was about 3" almost 4 I would guess...feed him mysis and had clips on both ends of the tank with dry seaweed...and ever since I got em the tang has been active until only yesterday I saw how listless he was...but overall since day one he's been my most active and favorite fish

Don't think so but when I got him he was flawless. But I did started to see his fins kind of beat up

Maybe ya got someone in there that duked it out with him. I do know, they don't much care for that.

A 4inch tang definatly didn't die of old age thats for sure. I lost a few tangs when I used to run activated carbon... stoped using it as part of my filtration and havn't lost one since.

What's activated carbon?

And reef your prob right that's the only thing I can think of

I read that article and that's almost down to the T of what I saw on my tang. Fins and tail looked all beat up and what not. It wasn't bad but that does seen to be right on
