Myka's 69 SPS Tank 2015

Hi Mika, I just finished the entire thread, you have been through the up and down of reefing, the experience is what makes this hobby so much fun, to achieve our goal of keeping our tank healthy and vibrant.
Like you, I also buy maricultured acros just to see what colors it will bring out and hopefully a Rainbow of colors will come out and don't forget that awesome feeling when it start taking off and branching and sprouting everywhere, now that to me is priceless.
I will also be following, oh I almost forgot to mention; your pictures are fantastic love the micro shots. Please keep up the update, you have more follower than you think Mika.

Wow, thank you for following along! Yeah this tank has been a pain in the butt. Part of it is simply that I don't have enough time to look after it consistently, so it goes through waves of me perking it up with regular maintenance, and then getting too busy and slacking off, and the cycle continues. Haha.

I love the maricultured pieces - you never know what you'll end up with. :D

LOL it looks like your Angelfish was green color blind - fish form of deuteranopia ;Troll.

Hahahaha!!!! I think you're right! He did eat all the beautiful blue torts.

Hey Mindy,

Awesome read you have here, just a quick question, how do you feel about your custom tank from Concept? Any issues I might have missed in your thread atall? I'm looking at possibly getting a build from them and I'm trying to find some customer reviews

Hi Josh,

The tank from Concept is really great. There was a bit of a miscommunication about the one-piece eurobracing - I wanted it in Starphire, and they did it in float glass (apparently "no one" wants to pay for a Starphire eurobrace, and in the end you really can't tell anyway haha). They offered to redo it, but I wasn't too concerned. The silicone is really good, there isn't a bubble in it. There is one catch though - if you want a PERFECT tank you must ask for a PERFECT tank. They make "quick production, budget-friendly" type tanks that will be similar to an Aqueon or Hagen tank, and they make "baller" type tanks. You will pay more for a PERFECT tank. So make sure that you have that conversation and that they know exactly what you're expecting, don't assume.

Thanks! This is exactly what I needed to hear and is in line with what I've been hearing elsewhere. I can see why most wouldn't want to pay for starphire single piece euro bracing as that would be crazy expensive for truly little benefit(though I'd probably pay for it too lol). And I'm glad you're still liking it now which is the most important thing.

I finally took some pics, and figured out how to post the videos (maybe haha let me know if they work). Lots of frags in the tank again since re-stocking after the jerk Angelfish. It took a LONG time for the tank to color back up after the Angelfish killed off half the tank. I miss a lot of those nice pieces I had. I haven't found replacements for the beautiful blue Torts I had. :(

The person I got that from said it came from Reef Raft Canada, but he couldn't remember the name of it.

It's been a long time, Mindy! How about an update?

Hey Bubba, happy new year!

Thanks for asking about the tank - I forgot about this thread. Unfortunately, there is no good news. We moved to a new house in mid-September. The tank move itself went well. I moved the contents into a livestock tub while I planned to make some modifications to the tank. The morning after the move things mostly looked ok - Johnson's Wrasse was looking stressed, but everything else was ok in the tub. I put some screen over the tub to keep the fish from jumping out, and also placed the 6-bulb ATI light over the tub to cover it since I couldn't find enough screening (after just moving). I had plugged the light in at one point to check on the fish and corals, but decided to leave the light off (unplugged) the next day while I was working for 10 hours since I wouldn't be around to check on things. My mom was in town helping us move, and she was checking on the fish during the day. At one point she mentioned that Johnson's Wrasse was laying on his side, and other fish were looking unhappy, and should she turn off the lights? Me: The lights are on? Oh ****. So needless to say, I indeed left the lights plugged in, and the timer kicked in and turned all the lights on. Since the tub was only 40 gallons and was also black, the tub got up to at least 88F. I got home shortly after and found most of the fish had died and Acros were losing tissue. In the end, every last Acropora died, all but 3 fish died, and the anemone died (I had it for 11 years). I was left with Montipora, LPS, gorgonians, and Zoas which all together make up maybe 10% of the tank. I was heartbroken over the loss of most of my fish, and especially my anemone. Two weeks later I was on a semi-local dive trip for a week - I came home and a gold Torch was touching a rainbow brain, and it was clear the rainbow brain was going to be toast. I had the brain for about 6 years, never came across one nicer, and now with Indo not exporting corals, was impossible to replace. That was the last coral in my tank I cared significantly for.

On top of all of this, we moved to a rural location, and found the water quality to be much lower than expected (over 1000 ppm TDS out of a well). We had it tested for pre-purchase and didn't realize the owners had dumped city water into the well, so when we tested it looked very good. So now we're not planning to install a whole-house filtration system for some time, and hauling RO water from the city is getting old fast. So just yesterday I decided I'll be shutting the tank down, and moved the remaining critters into a 20-gallon tank I have kicking around. The plan when buying a new house was to set up a larger tank with some big Angelfish and other beauties. Once we have the water situation figured out that will be back on the menu. Until then...RIP little reef.

Thanks for the update but it’s so sad to hear how it ended up. I hope the water situation gets figured out and you return better than ever!

Sorry to hear about this Mindy.
