Mysterious White Particles Floating In My Sump

Hi, I would love some insight into what these particles may be that are floating in my sump? They seem to be increasing in number, and now there is a film of them floating around my return.

I have seen a protein film collect on the surface when there isn't enough surface agitation. Unless there has been some airborne issue lately in the vicinity of the tank (e.g., dust, sanding, aerosol spray, etc.) it may not be a concern until it begins to block oxygen transfer at the water's surface.

I don't have my protein skimmer installed yet and am just using a filter roller. If this is the cause do you think the skimmer will fix the issue?

Yes, if it is what I am suggesting then the skimmer will remove much of what would be floating on the surface and the turbulence from the skimmer will keep the protein in the water column until it can be removed. In the mean time you can take a cup or container and push it all the way down in the water (with the cup upright) until the water just barely spills down into the cup and the worst of the floating particles will drain into the cup. I have also seen others use paper towels lightly on the surface, however I personally haven't found this to be as effective.
