So I have been planning my fish for my 220 and the family really likes the mystery wrasse. I have read that they can develop a taste for small shrimp. Anyone with experience on this matter? Would cleaner shrimp be safe?

Hmm ok. Then he is off. Any suggestions on a similarly looking but shrimp safe wrasse that my family might enjoy. It is so hard when all the fish they seem to love want to eat other members of my list.

@evolved. What about Anampses chrysocephalus. I know they are difficult to keep but would they pose a threat to anyone. It is going to be a very peaceful tank. I am already planning on a feeding schedule that involves feeding multiple times a day.

From a compatibility standpoint, fine; but realize it's a tougher challenge than a leopard.
A lot of what I read states that even if they take to frozen they have a high metabolism and are slow eaters so that they often just don't get enough from the daily feedings. Some also seem to eat fine and then fade like the cleaner wrasses. It is as if something crucial was missing from the prepared diet. I know it won't be easy if i choose to try these guys and I thank you for the warning.

I feed my blue stripe 4 times daily; twice with NLS pellets and twice with frozen, meaty foods. Nice and fat, and it's been over 18 months.

That is the nice thing with my house there is almost always someone here so it is not a big deal to have them feed a pre-measured amount of food throughout the day. My fish I have currently get two portions of NLS, one frozen, and one nori strip through out the day. This has kept two leopards and two mandarins fat and happy in a qt setup for the last 3 months while the 220 cycles. I plan on letting the mandarins have first dibs on the 220 as soon as I remove a mantis that made it through curing. Then adding my gobies while the new wrasses qt. So I can add all the wrasses at once.

My Mystery Wrasse killed my Blood Red shrimp, several Anthias, and my favorite huge Mandarin Goby. It is big and fat. I call it the Rainbow Barracuda! I will soon drain down my tank and remove it.

Good to know! This wrasse falls under not reef safe in my book now.

You can increase your chances with the Anampses chrysocephalus by getting a female instead of a male. Males are even more difficult.
