I received this tank from a friend who decided not to set it back up and heard I was going to get into the hobby. It's a 28 gallon display tank with a rear area for filtration. The tank is 23.5" tall and the stand is 30" tall.
Here are some pictures of the rear filter area that I'm having an issue figuring out how to set up. The man that built it has past away, so I can ask what his intentions were when he designed it. In the first picture you will see a removable tray with several small 1/8" holes in the larger area and a removable Square piece with a 1 3/4" hole secured by 4 1/4-20 plastic screws that thread into acrylic blocks in the smaller area.
This is a drawing of the top
I have worked on building a protein skimmer to fit into the 2.75" area that would be operated with a wooden airstone and pump. I'm also trying to figure out if i can drop the tray down to within 6" of the large area by attaching some stops for it to set on. placing the return pump under the tray and placing some chaeto to create a small refugium above.
Another option would be to get some aqua mesh to divide the large area vertically with the pump on the left side and refugium on the right. Or do I even try and do the refugium and just use a different filtration method.
I was going to use some filter material in the overflow area consisting of a bio media bag at bottom with a bag of carbon above that, topped off with a filter sponge material, that for lack of a proper name, looks like comforter stuffing that I was given with the tank.
That being said I was also given these items. I thought bought drilling the tank somewhere in the rear and creating a sump in the stand and use both the rear and the sump for my filtration. That would allow a factory built protein skimmer and larger area for a refugium. Also a larger area to place the light for the fuge.
If you made it this far in my rambling, welcome to my thought process and the inner workings of my mind. ALLLLLLL comments will be greatly appreciated. My salt, rodi, certain chemicals, and test kits will be arriving late next week. Let the fun start.
