Name all the ways you "filter" your reef aquarium?

Happy Monday R2R Fam!

This week we're going to be focusing our topics on Saltwater Reef Aquarium Filtration! Sounds like a hoot huh?! Well hopefully it will be informative and we can learn from one another. When it comes to reef aquarium filtration there are many ways to "filter" a tank. It could be chemical, mechanical or biological! Many of us choose a combination of methods for filtering, skimmers, rock, filter media etc, and that's what I want to discuss today!

What are all the ways you are "filtering" your reef aquarium? (name each specifically please) skimmer, scrubber, media, liverock etc.

I like to KISS...

- First part of my AIO filter chamber is filter pad, floss, or whatever you wanna call it, and below that I run Brightwell Purit
- Second chamber is full of live rock/media/other stuff to help host beneficial bacteria
- In the second chamber I have a Tunze 9001 skimmer

How often do you change your filter socks?

i usually leave them longer than i should, but roughly 2-3 weeks. started swapping them out sooner since i have what seems to be cyano coming in. so now i’m swapping weekly

My display tank has some live rock, but mostly dry rock & dry sand, and corals that help with filtration. A cryptic fuge is full of live rock, live rubble rock, and live sand in the sump. It does a lot of the work. I use 100 um filter socks from time to time, but most of the time I use 600 um mesh that just catches big stuff and breaks up the bubbles caused by my Durso overflows. I use a relatively weak skimmer (Curve 7) in the sump also.

My overflow goes directly into the middle chamber of the sump (no filter sock/pad) There I have a skimmer, and an ATS that's resting on top of a basket filled with a thin layer of sand and a lot of live rocks/ rubble and some various bio-media I had laying around.

OTHER: I used a chiller to filter heat out of the water.

Without that filter, it would go anoxic in the summer.

I did a water change an hour ago. Going to do another one tomorrow. Everything is fine but I want to see if my urchin will get fluffy. When the urchin is fluffy I know that everything is really happy. I just looked in. Its fluffyish.

Have tried a refugium a couple times with cheato and no success. May need to try another algae or something. Have thought about an algae reactor or algae scrubber.
