Hello All,

Fitting first post, I am first time contributor, but long time observer. It is finally time for me to seek help. I increased my lights about 2 months ago from ramping 4 hours up and down (4 hours at peak) which was perfect for my tank at the time. to 12 hours at peak I changed it because, well, sometimes you can't just leave well enough alone. I began to see an algae problem. Not thinking anything of and not worrying I left it everything the way it was. Reason being, I had untraceable Nitrates and ~0.08ppm phosphates. Well, this became a huge problem! The girlfriend was complaining about it so I knew I had to do something. As of three weeks ago I add phosphate removal media, cleaned all of the rocks, and cut back the lights to 6 hours peak. Today, rocks and everything are smothered in algae. It is not green but it is hairy and these little bubbles growing on it as well. I originally thought it was Dino's so I purchase Dino x, but I am beginning to believe it is just hair algae. What can be the cause and how do I get this crap out of my tank?

Parameters
  • nitrates: untraceable
  • phosphates: untraceable (as of yesterday)
  • salinity: 1.025
  • alk:12
  • cal:500
  • mag:1400
Yes, I have an RODI unit and it reads 0 PPM with a TDS meter.

I call it the brown slim stuff. There are a lot of types i think. I had this stuff something terrible in one tank. Got a little in another. I started dosing a little Po4& No3,cleared it right up. I would not have known it was from very low nutrients if not for the good Folks here.

How would I go about dosing NO3? Stump remover?
