I saw someone post something similar specifically about their own but its a good question...

Rose
Quads
Rainbow
Sunburst
Watermelon....

How to tell what constitutes the name here?

So I bought my "rainbow" nems as advertised and they most definitely have at least 4 colors depending on the light shining on them...
Green, Red, purple, blues depending on the time of day, and the lights shining on them...
Also depth they are in the tank. For instance when i got mine and was acclimating to water I had it floating on top of the water in a bin. So it was directly under my LED and the colors were insane... Looked like Flame reds, sunbursting oranges, blues purples, etc...
While my larger one is attached in its cave, the base/foot glows green and the tentacles stretch out and are more green and red with slight purple/blue tips.
While my smaller ones are more on a smaller rock so they do not retreat and their colors are more vibrant as in you can see them up close, the speckles and all....

Anyway... Whats to determine the correct name?
Quads?
Rainbow?
Rose?
Etc?

IMO, there is only one correct name --- E. quadricolor.

While this may be true as far as scientific classification goes, it isn't helpful for identification of the different varieties that fall under that heading. For example, a Green BTA and a Rose BTA are both E. quadricolor, but both look very different in a tank. Others include rainbows, colorado sunbursts, lemon drops, and a plethora of other distinctions. Some of the names do get a little out there since there's not a ton of difference for example between a "rainbow" and a "multicolor" nem. However, some are easily differentiated and should be identified by distinctive names IMHO.

IMO, the problem is that those are just made up names. (( Excluding "Green" and "Rose", they are true colors, and of course will look different from each other )).

To the best of my knowledge, there is nothing set that makes one a "rainbow" and another "multicolor". In addition, they are going to look a heck of a lot different under LED compared to a 250 Watt Radium. To me, it is similar to some of the crazy names for zoas.

I agree that's true in some cases, but it doesn't seem true across the board. For example, I am familiar with the Bowser vs. CAO drama, and the rainbow palys in general are often so similar that there probably shouldn't be a different name (again...my opinion)...if you can't tell them apart why bother? However, there is enough of a difference between say CAOs and Red hornets to warrant different names and specification. The same is true of BTA's. A Colorado Sunburst looks very different from a GBTA which looks very different from a RBTA which looks very different from a Rainbow and a lemon drop...and so on... I don't like seeing people go crazy on coral names, but neither do I agree that names are totally unnecessary. I wouldn't want to just order a E. quadricolor with no idea what variation I am getting...to me the fact that there's enough difference to say that justifies differentiating between color variations.

Also, while some nems don't seem to retain their color variations under some LEDs, I think that's more than likely an issue with the LED's lack of spectrum (or that the operator has them dialed in way too high) than it is an issue with the idea that the nem has a different color variation. We see the same issue with acans and some chalices. If the spectrum isn't right, then these guys lose color and "morph." Does that mean they shouldn't receive a label? Not in my opinion bc the issue is with the light rather than the nem. T5s and MHs tend to be more consistent in maintaining colors in BTAs...and some LED fixtures are starting to get there. :)

i will agree that there should a way to differentiate to some degree between bta's. green, rose, rainbow, ect... that is reasonable, imo.

i don't order bta's online, so no need for a name to tell me what i'm getting. photoshop can do wonders. i would rather see what i'm getting before i put out the cash.

on the other hand, some people slap a name on a bta, and charge an outrageous price for it. that is ridiculous, imo. although.... there are many people that get caught up in the hype and will pay the extra price just to have the name. to each their own. if people want to go that route, then they should be free to. i think it's foolish, but to each their own.

personally, i chase color and not names. i have a couple named bta's, but i didn't buy them for that. i bought them because another local member paid the big pucks for a named bta, had splits, and decided to part with them for a decent price. they look nice, but not worth paying the high dollar for, imo. i personally haven't seen any nem worth paying the high dollar some people want to charge....
