OK, so kinda new here, but have noticed lots of zoas posted for id. I was just curious what the guidelines are for this. I mean, if you post a pic, and no one can ID it, you get to name it whatever.....then what? How does it go about being called that from now on? Not questioning anybody in particular, just curious about a common trend I see here. Is it that easy, and is it that necessary? Is it for future ID purposes, or for cost determination, or personal triumph....? Sorry for all the questions, but if you don't know, ask....right? Again, just curious as there are so many here getting new names and such.....
Thanks everyone in advance!

Amie, generally its to determine if a particular zoa has already been officially named or not; sometimes this does affect $ value, but hopefully not. The idea (at least in my mind) is to have a general idea of what a particular zoa looks like because of the name. There are several "official" naming sites out there, and yes if your zoa is unnamed, you can submit it with a picture in order to get it named (personal triumph - some people think it will increase the $ value). HTH

In addition to what scopus mentioned another reason why people ask is because it is a good way to catalog what you have and easily communicate it to others. If you want to go further than that, it can provide insight for the proper care for a particular strain (I.E. your Purple Deaths will do fine in almost any condition, but they purple is the brightest under more shaded conditions).

So some people use it for marketing, but I like to identify (catalog) my collection so I can keep track of it and replace anything that I may lose.

Thanks guys! Makes sense! i just wasn't aware there were so many out there without names, I guess they would be new species/strains/morphs or something, and guess I thought there was some ****angels singing here****ZOA NAMING GODS****that chose these "special" names for each and every polyp out there....didn't realize it was more of a hobbiest to hobbiest thing...it was just kinda puzzling....thanks for clearing things up! I'll have to take a closer look at all the zoas I have and get to the task of id'ing them....
