I recently visited a LFS and they had regular clownfish as well as nano clownfish. The guy working there said they are not baby clowns and will grow only to about 1-2 inches. Anyone heard of this? I did a search but did not find any info.

I've seen dwarfed clowns before. A LFS around me had one that was 1.5" that was 5 years old. It just wouldn't grow, while all his buddies became monster sized clowns.

I use to breed bettas and every once in awhile you would get dwarfed specimens. Even when I tried to produce better feeding conditions by spreading them out in various tanks, I still had dwarfed bettas appear. These dwarf bettas never grew more than 1/2". So its not entirely impossible to see dwarf clowns.

Does this LFS have a site? I would be interested in dwarfed/nano specimens.

The fish don't grow big if their living environment are small. The baby clowns might not go as big if you keep them in a pico. However, the clown fish will thrive or not in this environment is a different story. We have bonsai plumeria trees by putting them in small bucket prohibiting growth.....

I have a platinum clown in my son's nano tank. We got it as a baby, a very small baby and I've had him for 18 months and it's only about 1'' or so. They will stay smaller in a small tank but that guy has a clever sales pitch on the same clowns he's selling for ''big'' tanks. Let me guess, there more money too right, lol

I feel more comfortable leaving the name of the store undisclosed. In any event, sales guy told me the breeder is from a neighboring state and this is how they are bred. Regular and nano clowns were priced the same. I am starting a 10 gallon nano and am tempted to get them but couldn't find any info about it.

I was guessing they would be bred clowns from someone. Breeding for smaller clowns is definitely possible.

I too have a ten gallon nano and my shop just sold me the smallest pair he had. He told me up front they would grow but didn't try to gimmick me into buying them.
