Is it clacking? If so, definitely the impeller. If it is just bubbly gurgling, check the water levels. You need to play with them sometimes. Welcome to the fishy family!

Red Sea told to do that. It worked like a charm. I was a one loud butt skimmer driving my wife nuts. At least I won’t be in the dog house anymore more.
