So I have a small 40l tank with 2 tiny clown fish do I need a nano skimmer or is it overkill as I'm having trouble setting it up
Thanks for the advise I think I will do as you say as I didn't really like the skimmer as it made to much noise and I do water 20% fortnightly with bacteria added just waiting for the tank to build up its own system.I’d say it’s overkill and skimmers aren’t must-have items, especially on nano or pico tanks. I believe doing a one gallon weekly water change is pretty much all the nutrient export you’ll need for a while. It’s the perfect way to start out because it’s easy and will teach you how to set up a consistent routine which is key to this hobby. It’s reliable with little to go wrong as long as you have a well calibrated refractometer and match the temperature. I recommend investing in an aquarium siphon and add a ball valve to the line so you can suck the crud out of the sandbed during water changes and be able to dial down the suction enough to not remove sand in the process. Reducing the siphon’s flow rate will also give you a lot more time to work with before that gallon is drained out. This is how I run my 29g and it couldn’t be easier.
