I'm looking at picking up a skimmer for my 29 gallon tank and narrowed my search down to 3. Anyone have any opinions on the reef octopus bh 50, tunze 9004, or the hydor slim skim. I don't have a sump, so I'm limited in options. I also did some research on the aquamaxx 1.5 hob but was a little turned away by the price. I know you get what you pay for, but I like finding the middle ground between quality and price. Thanks!

Out of the ones you listed: Tunze 9012
I've heard tunze quality is really up there. I think the 9012 specifically would be too tall for my tank, it being 16" high and my tank is only 12" deep. The 9004 or 9001 would be the only ones that fit. I'm gonna keep an eye out on classifieds for them. Thanks for the input!

I have tunze 9001 in my biocube 29 and nothing can beat it. I have tried AquaMaxx, Eshopps nano, Icecap k1, hydrodor and they are all now sitting on a shelf in the garage. The icecap k1 was a worthy challenger, but the pump quit and I can't find a replacement. I even tried the tunze 9004 dc, it fits snuggly into chamber 2 with the media basket but it was hell to disassemble and clean. The tab broke during re-assembly and now it too sits in the garage somewhere. Another good thing about the tunze 9001 is I can pump air thru a homemade CO2 scrubber into it, which raises the pH about 0.1.

Oops sorry I meant the 9004. That's what I use in 12" depth and it's fine. But get the DC powered one.

Do you have any experience with reef octopus? I was set on the tunze but recently read good things about the product and it peeked my interest. I know reef octopus is a pretty prominent company in the industry as far as skimmers go.

Oh wow, okay. I was questioning whether to go with the 9004, since its bigger or the smaller 9001. I really like the smaller footprint of the 9001 also. Thanks! Do you have any experience with the reef octopus either? That one has been sticking out to me. But that one also happens to be pretty big and would be an eyesore in the display.

I use reef octopus for any applications too big for the tunze 9004. In terms of HOB, I like the bh-90 but it's overkill. The reefocto nano you posted I'm not familiar with, I'd imagine they all perform about the same. But for the two in-tank skimmers tunze and reefocto, I'd be concerned with the footprint taking up tank real estate. In which case, I'd personally pick the smaller one, whichever that is.

I like the thought process and agree with it. I'll have to figure out which is smaller. I've also read raving reviews about the aquamaxx hob.
