Hi everyone!
So I'm new to the R2R forum, but I've had a couple of reef tanks in the past. For the past couple of weeks, I've been in the process of cycling and setting up a 10 gallon nano tank with an end goal of having some variety of sps.

I've chosen to go bare bottom so that I could have flow throughout the tank and put some corals on the bottom like encrusting monti’s.

Right now I have an aquaclear 50 and hydor 240 from an old tank during the cycling.

My problem is that I don't know what powerhead(s) would work well for this to make it not a constant flow on the corals.

I know I could probably use an MP10, but i’d rather use one of the significantly cheaper options if possible. I've also considered the icecap gyre 1k, which can be scaled down well, a tunze 6040, or a combination of hydors.

Any ideas, advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for anything! -Josh

I've got a Jebao OW-10 in my 15 column that has been working well for me for 10 months now. My tank is all softies and lps so I'm only running it at 30% but I've cranked it up a few times and been impressed with the results. It's pretty small, about the size of a tennis ball, has a magnetic base that's never moved, and the variable flow is really nice.

Even though I'd consider myself quite the Tunze fan-boy they dont disperse flow as broadly as the mp10 does, which in a SPS nano is going to be important as correct water flow dynamics for SPS are one of the biggest challenges posed in small tanks like that.

Hydors are okay but the footprint is an issue and their wave module is pretty limited at what you can do, I haven't messed with Gyres so I cant comment on them much, and I avoid anything Jebao.

If I was setting up a 10gal sps tank Mp10 would be my #1 choice, they are expensive, but in this hobby you get what you pay for with equipment, but that is just my two pennies

Awesome! I'll take a look at those. I see what you mean C. Eymann, and I think I may end up getting the mp10. Luckily, I don't have to rush because I'm waiting a good while before I put any corals in

I like eflux. I've had two 1050gph. For 2 years, no issuses

Wow! That looks great! What size tank is it in with those pumps? And yeah, the $140 for the gyre really sands out to me, not to mention their controllability looks to be pretty good. And a gyre flow style seems to be a good idea for my barbottom tank if I'm not mistaken

I am currently working on sps dominant 10 gallon myself, I went with an MP10 due to the wide flow and controllability. I’m happy with it so far but I’m still in the early stages just have small frags so far. I cycled it for about 8 months before adding coral. I also went bare bottom and used dry reef saver rock which made for a very biologically unstable tank. I tried adding acros after 3 months and they did well but I had to remove them when I got a bad case of Dino’s. I left the tank with just a few rock flower nems for 5 more months and once the Dino’s were gone and the algae that followed the dirty water approach to treat them was mostly gone I started adding frags. Right now I have a few montis, chalices, and two stylos. This is how it looks so far.

I just switched to a Jebao SOW-4 in my 10 gallon SPS and I love it. It's a lot stronger than I was expecting and I have a sand bed. I was surprised at the flow given such a small footprint compared to others.

Sorry but how did this turn out and what mp10 setting are you using?
