Been fighting algea non stop and have lost fish left and right. Hopefully I'll have more luck with my shallow tank. I never lost a fish in any of my other tanks. My Best tank was my 75g so I'm pretty much copying that setup with the new tank.

I always heard that nano's were tough because they are so small and I guess they are right. Corals do fine though.

I've had my 20L for over a year now and haven't lost much. Just have to stay on top of the game man!
Yes it is tougher with smaller tanks. Good luck on your next one!

Yeah I'm not sure what it is. I've had everything tested. 24g Aquapod and I do 5 gal weekly water changes. Fish are all QT'd and look fine before entry. Bar goby Jumped out after a month, 6-line dissapered las week, Clown looks like it may have fin rot, Lawnmower blenny was crab food this morning. All this within a month. Last fish was added 2 months ago.

I never wanted to do a tank under 100 gal. The swings a small tank can take are devastating..I have warned a few newbies I know, with little regard, and they are all out of the hobby because of this.

I agree i started with a 14g nano and everything was good for the first 6 months and then the bio load really started to catch up even with me doing water changes every couple days. When dealing with a small volume of water the slightest change in params can be jurastic.

haha shortly after that 14g i was up to close to 300g. I kind of went from one extreme to the next and now have finnally found a happy medium. I'm itching for an upgrade though.

The Blenny and 6Line may have starved to death, Blennys need all that algae and a 6line needs alot of critters on the rock and Pods.

Nanos are great they can be easy just have to keep up with them everyday.

Very true. I once had a 20L full of SPS as a frag tank. Wasn't hooked into another system or anything; I just did a daily top-off.

Yeah I've been doing this for 4 1/2 years now. First tank was a 75g. Best tank I've had. Never lost anything. Had it for a little over a year. Sold it because I thought I was moving. Next tank was a 60g cube. Had HA problem but never lost anything. Had it for a year. Sold it because I did move. Now I have the nano and I've never lost so many fish before. My coral do great but fish always die. They last a good while but end up dieing.

Now I'm seting up a 57g shallow tank. Hopefully I'll have better luck with this one.

I just don't get it though. My buddy has a extremely overstocked 29g bowfront with HOB biowheel filter and he never has a problem.

The only losses I have had were to a crab in my nano (BC 29). I lost 2 wrasses and a small clown to it. Since it's removal everything lives in peace. My nano seems to fair well with just top off and then 5 gal water changes every other week. I only wish I had a bigger tank because im running out of real estate. Algae is on lock down now that my clean up crew found a happy medium.

I have a 28g mixed reef tank. I've had nothing but success with my nano. I often think about upgrading, but this tank keeps flourishing. I'm a high end paly/zoa collector, but also keep sps's and a few chalices. Everything in my tank came from small frags. Now they are either colonies or mini colonies. I've even had to sell my sps's a fee months back becausae they outgrew my tank. The key to success is regular water changes and keeping the temp stable. :)

My experience in the year that I have kept my nano is that patience is the key to survival, know how big that coral will grow (don't guess), never miss a water change and everything in moderation. I haven't lost any fish yet - knock on wood - and I try to overfeed a varied diet and let the clean up crew do their job on the excess.
