This started out as red gills a few weeks ago, I thought perhaps it was blushing from lack of gill pigment, but it blew up recently...
the tank mates seem unaffected so far...maybe..
is she headed for the freezer?

Need more information. What symptoms besides the inflammation in the gills?

What fish is this?
duh, yeah my bad....
it’s a gold dust mollie from my frag tank ... the fish has always had “blushing” gills so I figured it a pigment thing like you see in calico goldfish or blue fw angels ....
I haven’t noticed labored breathing but you see a slight mollie “ shimmy”in its swimming which isn’t uncommon for LFS mollies...
I got a black one who’s gill plates look slightly flared, but again the breathing rate is ok and no surface skimming et

Hmm freshwater...

Usually inflamed gills I'd think ich or another parasite. I'm apprehensive to say anything because it's freshwater fish. Maybe one of the experts would be able to say with much more confidence.

Is she flashing? Swiming against current? Eating?

The pictures aren’t really clear, but there isn’t any common infectious disease that I know of that would cause this.
Can you tell if the color originates from the gill operculum itself, or the gills beneath?

no flashing or obvious discomfort , gill movement looks normal

It looks more underneath, I thought it looked like a pigment thing at first until recently .... I hate to destroy the fish but it’s not looking good...I’ll try to get a better picture
