Getting back into reefing after a 10 year ish break. Man have things changed! I had a successful tank without all of the potions and fluff back in the day. I'm curious if there are many out there with this approach? I am not so set in my ways that I will not be open to new beneficial advancements but things seem problematic and sterile now. Interested to hear your take on it?

I'm with you! Reef systems are very complex and from what I've seen over the years the KISS method is best. Here's a book you might find informative - "Coral Reefs in the Microbial Seas" by FOrest ROhwer (kindle is ~$10, papaerback ~$17). Here's spme video syou might enjoy also:

I watched the Richard Ross video its great! Thanks for the info I will check it out! Much appreciated

What do you consider to be potions and fluff?

There’s more automation and cheaper led lighting. I did pretty much what I had done before when I jumped back in after a decade break except for adding an ATO, DC pumps and power heads and black box LED lights and subtracting a deep sand bed.

Vibrant, Dr Tim's, dyno x, or any of the boxes of instant fix stuff I found with my recent used tank purchase that is having dyno problems at the 2 year old mark. I never dealt with that before so my thinking is that a quick fix sets things back? I just ordered live rock hoping to get diversity in my tank....its a wasteland no pods no bristle worm no feather dusters no sponges sea squirts etc etc

I do see benefits and appreciate the Neptune and auto water top off not all new things are bad!

Yeah. I kinda miss ordering tons of live rock and letting it cycle that way. I did use mostly dead rock but added a few pieces of live rock and live sand to get things going.

you should find @Paul B thread on natural immunity.

I would much rather follow you on this thread, I will also link my thread on “old school nutrient management”. Between Paul and I, we have 100 yrs reefer experience. In fact, he writes books about it.

Excuse film algae, it’s been a week. Outside gardening is keeping me busy. This tank is 25 years mature. Paul’s is 50 yrs old.
