I have a 2 year old mixed reef tank. I have had no luck w anemones and my maroon clown loves the turf algae in its place ?

Will this algae compete with coraline algae that is growing elsewhere in the tank ? I have SPS parameters in tank and have relied on mostly adding to tank diversity in leu of using medicines or additives best I can of course. I dose kalkwasser for past 6 months . I have small patches. I want to leave small amounts of turf but not if it competes w CORALLINE . Thx for your opinions in advance.

Are you trying to get your clowns to host an anemone or are you having issues keeping anemones in general?
No problem hosting ! If anything my clown invaded his space lol. Not interested in getting any anemones. Just curious if I can use the turf around this arch in the rock for clown and still grow encrusting coraline elsewhere?

It'll probably compete if you have too much turf. I've found (genrally) that it just prevents it from growing in the same areas that it grows turf- though in looking at my tank, I don't have a lot of coraline but I do have quite a bit of turf algae that I'm battling, so it's definitley possible that it competes more than I originally thought.
Maybe @Randy Holmes-Farley would have some better insight since it all has to do with the chemistry anyways.

Yea I actually like the look of it swaying under the blues. My maroon seems to dig it too so I will leave it . Thx

I don’t think it would affect the coralline algae. Although both need light for photosynthesis, coralline algae needs ca and alk where as turf needs nitrate and phosphate. The more surface area the coralline takes the less area for the turf algae.

My turf algae is killing my coralline algae, it is just flaking off the glass. Two years of coralline growth and the turf algae has killed half of the back glass on my 75 in about 6 months. I am constantly brushing the algae off while trying to eliminate the turf algae and the coralline comes off with the turf. It covers the coralline and starves it of light.
