Natural Neighbors?

Knowing how reefers are usually, umm, "collectors" this is probably a silly question, but has anybody explored stocking with just corals that would occur together in nature? EG: a Bahamas tank, a southern Caribbean tank, a Red Sea tank, etc.
I know this has been done a bit with fish-only tanks. I've done searches, but haven't found any matches.

There are lots of Caribbean tanks out there, but they are not that appealing to those who want stony corals. I dream of doing one some day.
