I just moved near the ocean. Water looks clean and clear, and I'd like to try to collect some water for use in my tank.

Is there anyone out there using natural seawater that can tell me what they do to it after they collect it? If you have some steps I could follow I'd appreciate it.

Thanks!

I use nw but not from the shoreline. A local LFS has shipments of it that get water from a couple miles out rather than shore. You wouldnt believe the crap that is dumped a mile offshore. It all depends where you live. Most people collect by an inlet at high tide

Thanks, high tide is good advice. I am just wondering how long to keep it in my container with aeration before I put it in my tank. Any other tips are appreciated.

being from southern calif.. we have a few comanys that offer delivered nsw to store or to hmm the service guys like myself. they pool from a few places. i did use it for years on and off. catalina water.llc. there are also a few places where public can take water for free. overall it did work good. no major problems, cyno in summer probably due to hot weather in a tanker. i did go back to making my own. i can control my calcium and alk better. and in the long run i found out that the d a d salt was the cheapest for my case due that i do not need to buffer and add as many elements.
if you are really curious about your water send it to that water testing place for 25.00 they can test more stuff then i can test in 2 hours..lol
hope this helps any other questions you can pm me your number and we can discuss it over the phone if that helps..

Rich,
what testing place is that? Looking forward to reef-a-paloza for my first time.

here you go..
Aquarium Water Testing

i use it every 3 months or so to double check things and keep an eye on the potasium and such.. seriously this is way to easy to have them do. put the water in the containers that they ship you in advance, 2 days later you get a nice print out.. too cool for school.

WOw $40 bucks to have someone test your water??? If it was reasonable like $20 or $25 I would also consider using the service to test my water as well, maybe 4 times a year or so like mentioned.

Yeah, that is a little steep for me, but a good resource to know about - thanks.

Looking for a method or process for getting NSW ready for use if anyone out there has a plan for that. Thanks.
