So what, once grown a few months I can’t even tell the difference from my natural splits vs cuts. Why do buyers always ask this question? thoughts?

Question is not clear
If you’re saying they ask if is split or freshly cut, they’re looking to assure specimen is healed

Some hobbyist believe that there is better long term success from natural splits versus cut mushrooms. I don't have any personal experience but I do know several reefers with substantial mushroom collections on here that prefer natural splits for this reason.
@LRT care to chime in?

Unless cuts are taken in a supremely healthy, mature (what do those 2 things mean anyway?Contradicting papers come out on subject constantly) system i wouldnt risk buying or cutting a mushroom at all. You cant precisely know or tell if there isn't a pathogen floating around because the science on pathogens isn't complete.
Ive noticed on my reef as well as through tons of research that some species are super prone to bacterial infections as it is. Ive seen it first hand. Infection wipe out entire species in my tank.
The biggest reason for me though is the fact that I've purchased somewhere around 13 mushroom frags from vendors or other reefers.
Only 2 of those "cut" shrooms are still alive today.
All of the shrooms lost where high dollar collector bounce shrooms. I would especially not risk buying a cut rhodactis bounce shroom.

All my natural splits still thriving.

I agree, but I think if you grow it all the way out before even thinking of selling there is no difference. fully healed, grown out with its own mouth, same genetics. I think asking if it’s a natural split is maybe just being snobbish?:)

that being said, I have lost mushroom I bought here and we’re obviously fresh cuts that didnt make it.

For sure. My experience with the "cut" shrooms i bought is the majority generally had issues within first 6 months. The rest by 1 yr to maybe year and a half mark.
I have 2 left that have made it that I would consider healthy and thriving and going to survive.
Its super easy to cut a shroom and heal it up. There is an exception in some shrooms but in my experience most dont make it past 1yr mark.
My lack of success with fragged shrooms could be entirely my fault no doubt. But it would be cool to see a poll on how many make it past the 1 and 2 yr mark.

So far I’ve haven’t lost any of my own cuts and I have a couple that are a two year mark. To be clear I don’t cut to sell but sometimes when moving things around you’ll end with a Foot or piece of skirt that attached and you have to cut. To me it’s no different then cloning a plant.

No doubt. I have been experimenting with taking foot "booger" cuts quite a bit and have it pretty dialed in now.
I've had 100% success taking pieces of foot that where already outstretched away from stem. Practically shroom is walking and going to drop naturally either way. Or I have taken bubbled up pieces of foot from moms that otherwise never dropped a baby on there own in 2 yrs ive had them and probably never would have idk.
I think correct approach and technique to cloning shrooms can be refined and dialed in and be super successful for long term healthy shrooms. Just have to take the right cuts. Like cloning plants etc. Although I was able to get a "leaf" to grow roots in peat moss back in the day lol.
Here's a cpl successful foot boogers ive taken recently:) There's no question I believe these are going to grow up into happy healthy long term colonies.
