Natural Sunlight

Hello Everyone!

Well, to start off, I should have listened to everyone on going bigger.... Not because it's easier but because I would want to upgrade! We just moved into a new house and I got a free 75 gallon tank (excuse the stand ... I will not be using that one. I will be building one!) and I'm putting it in my office. Although, my office gets a lot of sunlight mid-afternoon for the remainder of the day. Pictures are attached for reference. They were taken at 5:15 PM. During the mid part of the day it is definitely brighter in the room!

I suppose my question is: will this negatively impact my reef tank? Do I need to get room darkening curtains/blinds? All opinions are accepted and welcomed!

I'm interested to hear what you all have to say!

My tank is below a large lantern/roof light window (2 x 4.8m) and one end receives direct sunlight every day, subject to cloud cover. During cycling and for a few months afterwards that end was certainly prone to more algae growth. However, since my nutrients have stabilised a little the tank is pretty clean and I cannot see any difference at that end.

If the brightness of the natural light coincides with your light cycle then I wouldn't worry about it. If you are planning on starting your cycle late in the day for evening viewing then I would put curtains up.

I will likely run my lights during the times of when the sunlight will be directed toward the tank. Therefore, I'm glad to hear that it wont be a problem!

I don’t think the natural light will b a problem. I have the am light hit my tank and I enjoy the natural sunlight look. Good luck w the new tank

Thank you! I can't wait to start the build thread. It feels HUGE in comparison to the 20 gallon long I had. I'm not even sure where to start as far as live stock lol!

Yeah I'm drilling it. I bought a Eshopps Eclipse Small for another build but I called BRS and they said I will be okay using that on the 75g since it's max is 600gph. I don't plan to run crazy, 10x, fast flow. I will also be using a Sicce syncra 3.0 DC pump. Debating on the skimmer right now. Definitely will not be using filter socks.
