NatuReef Controlled Biological Denitrification Reactors

I know of 3 tanks using this and all three are very successful. The upfront cost seems to be a little high but after that it's pretty reasonable. Plus the money you save from less water changes and not running gfo/other phosphate removing media.

I'm currently running one and it is working for me so far. Mine is still new but it has brought my nitrates from 10ppm to 5 ppm without any water changes. I have build up on my egg crate but not as much like others. I guess it still needs to flush more and create more mass.

Do you know how adjustable it is? I don't want 0 nitrates. I want it to be ~5ppm.

How does this compare to biopellets or these sulfur reactors?

I'm not too familiar with the system as I don't have one. I only know a bit from seeing it and asking some questions. I would say they differ from bio-pellets in the sense that you can dial it in to where you want it to be where biopellets can only remove limited amounts of nitrate and phosphate based on available food and can't really be dialed in. Hopefully someone with more knowledge on the system will chime in

I'm not overly familiar with the phosphate chemistry, but the nitrate part works by growing an anerobic bacteria that feeds off methanol. This particular bacteria converts nitrate to nitrogen gas. It simply is a tank with eggcrate to support the slimy white bacteria and a dosing pump to deliver the methanol. Very simple. It also comes with a pump that is used to flush this "reactor" tank once the bacteria has done it's thing. I think the small reactor tank is about 30 gallons from NatuReef, and not sure of the big one......I was considering the small one for my 90G DT. And it is controllable to maintain your nitrates/phophates at whatever level you wish to maintain.

If you search hard enough you'll find DIY threads. I too am not overly impressed with the apparent quality/finish of the actual NatuReef system...for what you pay. But it does work!

And you're right about finding information about the system....I think it would be easier to find the Ark of the Covenant than NatuReef information.
