Really want something colorful and active that is reef safe for a 40b, suggestions please!

A few ideas, lubbocks, pintail or lunatus fairy wrasse, pink bar goby, chalk bass, royal gramma, yellow assessor, yellow coris wrasse, grammistes blenny, midas blenny.

I have a yellow assessor and he/she is awesome but hides a lot,so I want something a little more active. Never heard of lubbocks so I will look them up now. A wrasse would be awesome, as would a blenny. Any chance I could keep one of the smaller tangs?

Any flasher wrasse, firefish but both will require a covered tank. I really like the black cap basslet in my 40, so that's another good choice.

Good suggestions, gotta just pick one now lol

I'm not certain about compatibility with the assessor but royal gramma or black cap basslet would get my vote. Personally I would also add a wrasse or two down the road.

Pilot fish. They are both colorful and active but they might outgrow a 40 gallon in a few years. People are always looking for larger pilot fish so it will be very easy to get rid of.

I don't think that's a good fit for a 40 gallon since they grow to be nearly 4 feet

I did say he will have to get rid of it in a couple of years. On average pilot fish are 2ft. Seeing a 4ft pilot fish is like seeing an 8ft man.

You could go with a Cherub Angel or a Flameback Angle both are with caution.

Definitely a Mystery Wrase. Black Cap is a fine choice as well but needs to be the final addition as the can be very territorial.

They average over 3', a healthy baby pilot should outgrow a 40b in a matter of weeks.
Hawkfish are ambush predators I think
You're right, they 'swoop down' much like a hawk. Though IME flame hawks have been fine with cleaner, blood and peppermint shrimp.

So you think they would be ok with a pair of fire shrimp in the tank?
