So my salinity has dropped from a comfortable 1.025 to 1.023 in my 29g, since i got new salt mix, I have coral so I need it back up. 1. Are my coral in danger right now and 2. How much salt should I add to get it back and how slow. I've already dissolved like 1/4 cup to a small amount of tank water in separate cup and poured it over a course of 5 minutes but salinity didnt budge. I've never had to adjust salinity like that. And 3. How much salt per gallon should I be using to get 1.025 iv been following box directions with 1/2 cup per gallon but now I'm thinking this is off. Please and thank you to anyone who chimes in.

Depends on how fast it dropped.. and I would not recommend mixing salt in a cup of water and pouring it into the tank.. you can burn your corals that way and salt is supposed to be mixed over night in my opinion for gas equilibrium to be completed and for it to stabilize.. just my two cents you are better off maintaining it where it is right now and taking it back up slowly in the water changes you are planning for. And on the norm a 1/2 cup to 1 gal of RO/DI water will give you a SG of 1.026 if you are using a good salt you might have to tweak it a little depending on the water you use and the quality of salt.. remember stability is key is this lovely hobby/passion/addiction hopefully this helped..

Get a refractometer. Then when u do your mix check it and adjust accordingly

Very much thank you but are my coral stressed right now or how does it work. My water changes are on monday. And will my pouring damage them permanently my only concern really is my euphyllia

I would mix a gallon to the right salinity and add it instead of RO when you top off everyday and keep a eye on it. Do you know why it has dropped ?

I never knew that even existed lol just googled it and will get one. the only reason I wasnt measuring my mixed water now is cause I mix 5 gallons in a ten gallon tank and that doesn't give me the 6 inch height for my hydrometer.

And I think it's dropping cause water is slightly splashing out or around from hob filters. I'm seeing salt on everything. I can't wait til my order comes in for my sump pieces. I'm getting rid of the hob fuge once it's all set up.

That would do it. How do you know your corals are stressed if you don't mind me asking.

Not at all, I m assuming there stressed they looked just fine before I added the little bit of salt, now mushroom has gotten smaller but I'm sure it will be fine tomorrow. I just read everywhere that .23 was too low for coral

After a little research I'm seeing .23 is just along the border of ok for the euphyllia but not best for the palys. I heard euphyllias are pretty hardy so I hope my little add didn't burn it or anything, after all the salinity didn't change

I use one of them floating hygrometers for about two years and it read fine but when I switch to reef crystals I got one with the needle and my salinity was at 1.021 and there is know telling how long it had been there. My corals where fine. I also did a 20g what change that day. The water a added was 1.025 and I never seen any problems. Just to be safe I would raise it slowly if you are seeing problems by adding that little bit. I hope your stuff gets in soon so you don't have this problem again I know what it is like to worry about your tank when thing aren't right but I have learned fixing it quick is worse than the problem itself.

So true that's why I got on here, il update in the morning. That should shed some light.

Yeah I had my tank at 95 degrees for almost a month and didn't loose nothing until the ac got fixed and the temp went back to normal overnight. Then I lost my first sps a red and green montipora. So see I know how you feel.

No when I bought it, it was orange but changed color under my light. These was last year so lesson learned. Lol

Stuff happens sorry about that, I'm off to bed. Seeya

I started off with one of the basic hydrometers you find at the pet store. For months it always said 1.025 and I believed it. Eventually I took the advice and found a refractometer for under $15 shipped. Calibrated it and when I tested my 1.025 water, it was actually 1.020. Nothing ever showed signs of stress from the lower salinity and I slowly upped the salinity by mixing my waterchange water to 1.027 and doing 10% water changes every week. I now keep everything around 1.024 just as a personal preference.

if your using a hydrometer did your temp change at all cause a hydrometer can show different results at different temps
