I got a Koralia Evo 1400-1500 gph power head for my 46g bowfront tank to add to an existing old one that came with it (no idea how much output it has)

Because I like the magnetic feature of the Koralia and I am too lazy to take the other out of my tank to use for mixing for water changes, I wanted to retire the old one and add a second Koralia

Since they aren't adjustable, should I get a smaller second one 800, or 1000 gph, or should I get another 1400-1500 gph one since ultimately I want to upgrade to a 75, 90, or 125 gallon tank in a year or so?

Would two 1400+ gph power heads be too much for a 46 gallon tank? Is there such a thing as too much flow? Could I just aim them more at the glass to limit their affects?

Thanks

There are different ways to diffuse flow. But I wouldn’t worry unless something is being blasted- corals, sand or other. Aiming at the glass is a good idea. Or try pump placement low to high and increase surface agitation. Also aim the pump across the tank without obstruction to far side glass.

Hope this helps.

That definitely is a lot of flow depending on what you are keeping. IMO, aiming at the glass never seems to do much since it just creates a strong gyre throughout the tank. You can try adjusting your live rock to block or deflect some of the flow. A SPS only tank would be fine but any LPS or soft coral would probably get blown around quite a bit. Also depends on what type of fish you are keeping...some can handle the strong flow while others cannot.

Well, I ordered another 1400-1500 unit, so I will figure out how to aim and make sure all is still happy.... worst case scenario I will just use one powerhead for now.
